speaking of, last night i dreamed that i was travelling for campus interviews. i first went to the wrong city, then i couldn't find the email invite and maybe made up that i had a campus interview at all, and also the university had ceased to exist

though i *will* take this opportunity to recommend david rakoff's essay about rent and what writing takes that is one of my favorite pieces of nonfiction. unfortunately it's heavily abridged on this american life, so you need to get Half Empty to enjoy the full thing (and you should! it's great!)

in grad school we did karaoke a lot at this terrible bar, and it was always so eclectic and fun EXCEPT when the musical theater kids would show up and do la vie boheme (which is like 8 minutes long btw)

point is: my subconscious is not subtle

my most common grad school dream was riding a bike up an increasingly steep hill, that eventually got so steep i was pedaling as hard as i could just to stay in place, and then i'd wake up. would have it all the time and then once i defended, never again

once in grad school i had a dream the department installed a giant scoreboard in the lounge that listed all the grad students and how well they were doing out of 5. it was all 4.7, 4.9, 4.8, ... and then i was sitting at a 3.2

(i'm just being a stinker btw. i'm quite glad i wrote an honors thesis)

definitely have to agree, my own experience writing an honors thesis was neither the least stressful, nor the most productive, satisfying capstone experience

you can just have an antirealist attitude about human cognitive capacities, and think anything that does (very roughly) the same stuff is cognitively the same, but then why are you talking about cognitive capacities in the first place?

a lot of people want to argue that LLMs have the same cognitive capacities as humans without so much as having a view on what human cognitive capacities are like, and i gotta say i don't think those arguments are likely to work
