Insanely correct. I’d add that it’s also produced some rather more impressive empirical explanations than ‘the mind is a steam engine’ did

there's a story that we've always compared the human mind to our most impressive tech and so when computers became the most impressive tech we started thinking of minds as computers and that's just not what happened historically! computational theory grew out of attempts to understand cognition!

'the mind is composed of items with both syntax and semantics, and formal operations defined over them. that's how intelligent behavior can be mechanistically implemented, and is assumed by most psychological explanations'

wow, evocative metaphor. a modern 'juliet is the sun'

there were lots lol. it was something like 'bayesian epistemologist: i can solve all of the problems of epistemology! i assume you already know how every possible observation would affect the likelihood of every proposition, right?'

tried and failed to find an old tweet being annoyed about bayesian epistemology, but i did find this incredibly annoying and pedantic meme i made about people misuising 'priors' in the popular discourse, so the day is not a total loss

The computational theory of mind is also well-equipped to explain why LLMs are dissimilar from human psychology in many important respects

for the record: the computational theory of mind is not actually committed to human beings being able to produce an exactly accurate drawing of a dollar bill from memory. in fact it is well equipped to predict the opposite

funny to me to juxtapose the daily nous comments about fucking at conferences and the daily nous comments about saying stuff in gaza is bad. philosophy really is good for every topic!

so glad to live after thomas bayes' illustrious theorem—now when i wake up and the sidewalk is wet, i can conclude that it rained last night. before father bayes, people would just sorta bump into walls

A bizarre Easter egg in this movie is Julia roberts’ character is a photographer and they use Steven pyke’s portraits of philosophers as her work, so there’s a photography exhibition and for no reason the centerpiece is a giant portrait of anscombe and geach

I feel bad for young people these days. When I was young, dating was insanely easy. All the girls at school thought I was cool and wanted to date me. There was no embarrassment or heartache. But now in joe Biden’s America it’s hard all of a sudden

Closest I am aware of is survey data indicating young people having less sex overall than previous cohorts, but you may notice some confounds
