The map is full of moving machinery, dramatic lighting and ambient sound effects that brings a sense of drama and liveliness that I just don't find that often. Perhaps it's because in the heyday of TFC performance was crucial, so there wasn't much incentive to pretty up maps like this. 2/2

Ravelin appears on the surface to be another run-of-the-mill "base in canyon" map, but on further inspection it has a stylish expressionist quality not seen anywhere else in the game. 1/2

This map is packed full of TFC-themed WW2 propaganda posters which brings a charming and comedic touch to the proceedings. They also date the map, as they use the pre-2003 update models for the classes. 2/2

Cornfield, another Bryan Dillow banger. Given its Italian theme, its fair to say this is connected to Palermo. The titular cornfield itself is a bit pedestrian, but the architecture around it is both functional and artistic enough for everything to work on the whole. 1/2

While Flagrun is small, the team bases are more elaborately laid out than they may first appear, so its important to quickly memorize your way around for both offense and defense. 2/2

Flagrun is another member of the Dustbowl and Warpath family, with the unique spin being the "reverse CTF" format in which players must take their flag to the enemy base. It's rare to see a map with the overview built-in. 1/2

This map is very densely packed, with no less than four different routes to the enemy base, two of which involve usable trams. This is balanced by the common usage of dark corridors that provide choke points in the defenders favour. 2/2

Subway is a CTF map based on the Hermannplatz U-Bahn Station in Berlin. The choice of textures and urban location give it a Counter-Strike vibe. I couldn't find any information about the author. Perhaps they were a resident of Berlin and frequented the station? 1/2

As with Rock 2, the original Canalzone map was made for Quake Team Fortress and redesigned for TFC. The non-linear layout and freedom of movement definitely echoes the Quake-based gameplay of its predecessor and would make for a good deathmatch map. 2/2

Canalzone 2 is another very Half-Lifey offering from Valve. A network of canals are used as the layout for a Territory Control challenge, with a bonus task of destroying the enemy team's command center for extra points. 1/2

The frozen aesthetic of this map isn't just for show. The player can slip on icy rock and destroy icicles during combat. It makes for a refreshing change from the usual hot and sweaty settings preferred by most TFC maps. 2/2

Vidars was made by Neil Manke. That's right, the They Hunger guy! Given how TH borrowed assets from TFC it's not surprising that members of Black Widow Games were also involved in the TFC modding scene. It certainly evokes They Hunger's third episode aesthetically. 1/2

I suspect the map's title and visual style were inspired by the 1995 film The Rock, which features an action-packed espionage operation taking place in a run-down prison at night. It's also a remake of Rock1, which was part of the original Quake Team Fortress mod. 2/2

Whilst the defenders start with the high ground, the attackers can use alternative routes to take them by surprise. The geography of the setting is a key part of how combat plays out, which is exactly what you want from a map set in mountainous Sicily. 2/2

Palermo is Bryan Dillow's magnum opus and an all-time favorite of mine. This map places Attack/Defend gameplay in the picturesque and highly vertical terrain of the Sicilian capital. The sheer height of some areas makes the environment feel epic. 1/2
