Instead of focusing on expenditures, lawmakers should look at the revenue side of the ledger to balance New Jersey's budget and help fix the structural deficit.
"There are more revenues that can and should be raised,β said NJPP's @ptrchn1.bsky.social.

Governor Sherrill's remarks this afternoon echo NJPP's longstanding concerns about potential cuts due to the state's structural deficit.
"NJPP urges the Governor to use all the tools available to close this deficit, including increasing the stateβs revenues."

The Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit are effective programs proven to lift families out of poverty and help them make ends meet.
New Jersey can build on this success and expand these programs to help make the state more affordable.

The next step is to make sure the study is done the right way -- which means using modern methods and valid data to inform the setting of the weights and base costs. Here's the latest example: www.njpp.org/publications...

Through H.R. 1 ("One Big Beautiful Bill Act"), federal lawmakers are dismantling health coverage supports with actions that will devastate New Jersey families.
With federal support disappearing, New Jersey lawmakers must maintain access to affordable, quality care.

PJM must do better to lower rates for families who have seen their bills spike β and it can.
βWe know that if PJM makes certain improvements ... customers can save hundreds of dollars over the next few years,β said NJPP's @alexfromnj.bsky.social.

GREAT news! Energy bill increases will be curbed -- at least for now.
PJM has agreed to cap energy prices til 2030. This is because of all the work state advocates + governors have done to force PJM to improve!

Today we joined @njlcv.bsky.social at the unveiling of their common agenda!
I spoke about the need to reform PJM and to hold data center companies accountable for their role in higher electric bills.
Together we can make New Jersey affordable for all!
βCongress is abandoning working families who were on the front lines during the pandemic,β said NJPP's @bholom11.bsky.social. βState leaders have the tools to counter these federal cuts. The question now is whether they'll act before families are pushed into crisis.β

Without state action, thousands more New Jerseyans will lose coverage.
The report calls on state leaders to expand subsidies, fix enrollment systems, create a public option, and ensure equal access across counties.
www.njpp.org/publications...
The report also finds that federal lawmakers are eliminating coverage options for immigrants, who are nearly 9 times more likely to be uninsured than native-born citizens because they have so few affordable coverage options β especially those living on low incomes.
www.njpp.org/publications...
The report finds that expired enhanced federal subsidies eliminated $500 million that helped residents afford marketplace coverage through GetCovered NJ.
And, Medicaid work requirements starting in 2027 will kick eligible people off coverage through paperwork barriers.

π¨ NEW REPORT π¨
More than 727,000 New Jerseyans currently lack health insurance, and that number will grow dramatically as Congress eliminates $500 million in marketplace subsidies and imposes new Medicaid work requirements.

Governor-Elect @mikiesherrill.bsky.social is inheriting a budget that looks good on the surface, but is actually a fiscal minefield.
NJPP Senior Policy Analyst @ptrchn1.bsky.social sat down with @njspotlightnews.org to break down his latest report:

βThe choices the Sherrill administration and legislature make in the coming months will determine whether New Jersey can maintain essential services and invest in its future, or whether we'll see harmful cuts that set the state back," said author @ptrchn1.bsky.social.

The report recommends putting sustainable revenue raisers in place and reducing expensive tax credit programs, so that the state doesn't need to dip into its cash reserves to maintain current programs.

Each of the five budget time bombs the report identifies will limit the stateβs options for addressing residentsβ needs.
These risks come on top of economic uncertainty, including a potential recession, which would reduce revenues and increase state costs.
