This is not (yet) a change of tone. But policymakers and parliamentarians should build on the momentum. All red lines have been crossed, people in Gaza are suffering from a men-made famine, documentation on genocidal acts continues and increases. Germany is morally and legally obligated to act.(4/4)

Fueling the credibility crisis/double standards, and undermining international rules-based order we depend on, plus taking away soft power and diplomatic leverage - on top of escalation and dire consequences this will have for people in the region and its security architecture for years to come.

Especially important not only when assessing how we got here but also when devising next steps for Europe/the EU. The US strikes (and Israel’s attacks) will not advance regional, European or global security and shouldn’t be framed as such.

I was briefed on the intelligence last week.

Iran posed no imminent threat of attack to the United States. Iran was not close to building a deliverable nuclear weapon. The negotiations Israel scuttled with their strikes held the potential for success.

What a horrific decision with devastating consequences. Instead of advancing peace or prevention of nuclear armament, this may push the region over the edge of war and have global consequences. EU (and member states!) must do everything to deescalate and refrain from escalatory rhetoric or actions.

The German chancellor saying Israel is doing the dirtywork for the West. Hundreds of civilians have already been killed in this escalation, without counting the ones in Gaza. Merz‘ rhetoric disregards human rights and international law, it fuels escalation, and pays into Germany‘s lost credibility.

Exactly that.

Great read by @ecfrmena.bsky.social 's Ellie Geranmayeh on how Europe should act to prevent war. 1st: Understanding the logic and scope of the attacks. "An unwillingness to acknowledge and condemn Israeli aggression will act as a green light for an escalated and dangerous military campaign".

With Trump's blatant support for escalation, a strong and unified European push for de-escalation and to holding all parties accountable to international law (in words and action) would open doors to diplomatic engagement with regional powers. A door the German MFA instead seems to be closing. (3/3)

If Germany continues to misconceive political realities, and fails to acknowledge and condemn the seriousness of this explicitly multiphase Israeli military campaign, it risks jeapordizing EU's efforts (or even chance) to play any role in deescalation and diplomatic efforts to prevent war. (2/3)

Israel has yet to submit evidence that would render these attacks anything other than a clear breach of international law, attacks have i.a. targeted residential areas and civil infrastructure (airports), killed civilians, and risk pushing the region over the edge into full-blown war. (1/3)
