tackle this methodologically by asking about disco. in general (media and non-media) while disco. only refers to media. But of course we would expect that this deliberate, strategic non-use would result in lower use or displacement to more productive use which would be linked with less...

Thanks, Tobias!

Interesting point! In the literature, we don't see disconnection conceptually linked with procrastination. The way we (and usually the literature) conceptualize it, disconnection is the deliberate reduction of (aspects of) use, not just less use in general. We also tried to...

But long story short, yes, our research indicates that digital disconnection seems to be effective to reduce procrastination in everyday life.

Scrolling and swiping tend to be more interesting than studying or working, leading to procrastination. Can we do something about that? We investigated whether temporary deliberate non-use of digital technologies (digital disconnection) is effective as a strategy against procrastination.

This plot shows the number of users in the Study 1 sample that self-described as 'addicted' to Instagram versus those who were 'at risk' of clinical addiction. The ratios for the addiction symptom scale are 9:371 and for the perceived addiction 69: 311, suggesting a much greater proportion of users self-perceive as addicted than are actually addicted to Instagram

Excited to see these studies (finally) published in Scientific Reports! 🚨

S1: More social media users perceived themselves as addicted than met clinical addiction criteria.

S2: Increasing perceived addiction hurt perceived control over use and increased self-blame for overuse.

Excellent talk! Love the clarity with of the arguments for habits. For me, It's always a struggle in reviews to point out the problem with using the addiction framework haphazardly. Also, great points for the solutions - we should absolutely hold the tech companies to account.

How often is too often in ESM research?
🚨New study out!
We compared 6 beeps/day vs. 12 beeps in 2 h bursts.
Both work, but burst designs show more fatigue + attrition β€” still useful if high temporal precision matters.
App onboarding, though? Big bias alert. πŸ“±
