Under the Sky We Make Ultimately, we need to restrict and finally stop extracting, selling, and burning fossil fuels. Fergus Green of the London School of Economics argues that fossil fuel bans (any government prohibition of any part of the fossil fuel supply chain, from exploration, construction, or supply to production and financing) signal the moral wrongness of fossil fuels, build an anti-fossil norm, and encourage states to persuade others to join them, as happened with the Powering Past Coal Al-liance. The independent Climate Policy Council in Sweden, which is tasked by Parliament with holding the government to account on meeting the country's climate law, recommends the Swedish government set a stop date for selling fossil fuels. A near-term fossil stop date will send a clear signal to industry that a future with a stable climate is not fossil-based. It will push current leadership to accept responsibility for starting the rapid transition needed, not expect to make it someone else's problem after they retire. In the end, the correct price for carbon emissions is infi-nite: a ban.
