If you've been here for a while, then you probably know Ricky. We adopted Ricky from a shelter when I was 15, and from that moment on, he became at least 75% of my personality. Three years ago, Ricky went missing. We put posters up on every street corner and local shop, knocked on hundreds of doors, posted on every local page we could possibly find and no one ever got back to us. His disappearance was unusual behaviour, he never stayed out long nor did he ever stray far. Today, we got a call from the local vet saying that Ricky had been taken in, but had heart failure and couldn't walk. We managed to get there on time to say our goodbyes, and I wa: able to hold him as he took his last breath. I've always thought this was common sense, but if you find a cat and they look lost, please take them to the vet. If they look healthy, they likely have an owner. Ricky didn't have a vet visit for three years and whoever had him dumped him once he was on death's door. It's hard not to have harsh and unfavourable assumptions about the people who took him in, but l'll never know who they were and why they decided to take him in for three years and then leave him to die alone (yes, we paid the vet bill). The likelihood is that we knocked on their doors when looking for him and they didn't give a fuck. There are cats in shelters who are looking for homes, please don't take someone else's. Everyone says their cat is the best cat, and maybe I'm biased, but mine really was. He knew whenever I was sad, and would sit or lie down by my feet, or rub his face against mine. When I was briefly admitted to hospital, he didn't leave my side from the moment I was discharged. I got a tattoo of Ricky a few years ago on my ankle so that no matter where I went, he'd still be by my side if I was ever sad. I can still feel him now. I'm glad he wasn't alone in his final moments and was still able to purr as I pet him one last time, sleep well baby

I don't know why we just don't push things like this more. Volunteering is such a good way of combatting loneliness and building community. Someone will come for me for saying it's unpaid labour, and yes it is, but there are such strong health and social benefits to things like this
