A Clear Day in Kamchatka
It isn’t often that we get a clear day across much of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. February 15, 2026 was one of those rare days and ESA’s Sentinel-2 had clear shots of so many vo…
I *may* have gotten carried away, but this weekend saw clear skies over Kamchatka ... so you get 26 Sentinel-2 shots with a bevy of Russian volcanoes. So many calderas. So many. eruptions.site/2026/02/17/a... #eruptions #volcanoes

A zoomed in look at 4 scientists working with the a lava fountain covering the entire background.
A very tall lava fountain with tiny dots (people) near the base. The image is a bit forced perspective and we are not as close as it looks
Someone captured my colleagues an I servicing the cameras during Kīlauea’s episode 42. We stopped to discuss what we were seeing, but because I talk with my hands it looks like I’m fixing to push someone in…

Kilauea erupted again yesterday in a fierce display. In only the 2nd time in 40 years, park officials closed the area due to the intensity.
Fountains were officially recorded at 500 m high, grapefruit size tephra were being ejected, and tephra fall was measured up to 20 miles away.

Looking down into a glowing volcanic vent, with a plume of steam and gas rising. All under a cloudy sky with dusk colours.
Red hot lava bombs rise out of a glowing volcanic vent during a loud volcanic explosion!
Still smiling after another amazing visit to Yasur volcano in Vanuatu just over a week ago. We were there to help VMGD install new infrasound microphones in their monitoring network, a vital tool for tracking eruptive activity.

Color mostly depends on the gas and ash content of the plume, i.e. more gas means whiter, more ash means greyer. Difficult to tell from color alone if plume is from a flow.

I suspect it's just different wind directions at different heights in the atmosphere, causing differentiation of the plume. Suggests a very tall plume.

Here is a hastily constructed animated gif from different NASA satellites showing the progression of the Hayli Gubbi eruption. Note the tall ash plume spreading NE (right) and a lower, light tan ash flow(?) moving NNW. #eruption #volcano

An explosive #eruption of Hayli Gubbi #volcano, located SE of Erta'Ale in the Afar Rift (Ethiopia), began at ~08:30 UTC on Nov 23. Eruption onset was fortuitously captured by a @planet.com overpass at 08:31 UTC. Hayli Gubbi has no record of Holocene eruptions. Toulouse VAAC reporting ash to ~15 km.

Great! Microsoft and Google autocaptions are awesome but still not perfect. They still struggle with non English or thick regional accents, or when microphones are not working correctly, so a little bit of text is still good to have.

Solid advice here but I disagree with the first point for one reason: accessibility.
Having text as 2 or 3 short bullet points on your slide will help deaf and HoH folks (such as myself) follow your talk as they might not be able to hear you.

A schematic 'slice' of seismic velocity beneath the geothermal systems north of Taupō. Low velocity anomalies are apparent at 7-12 km depth - which we interpret as representing crystal-rich partial melt.
Using earthquake data we image seismic velocity 'anomalies' at 7-12 km depth beneath geothermal systems, north of Taupō, New Zealand. We interpret the anomalies as representing crystal-rich partial melt – the deep heat sources driving the geothermal systems.
