Instead of astrobites where the blog authors are in-discipline readers of a paper written by someone else, something where the author of a paper writes their own publicly accessible explainer with an editor from a completely different discipline (or maybe not an academic at all) to sharpen the text.

I would like to see an academia blog where people from across disciplines can write posts targeted at an ~average high-school education audience.

I may not have the reach of a certain Trigun fan, but I recommend reading this book with similar enthusiasm.

Going right next to Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu on the list of melancholic+awesome+enthusedly-recommending-to-friends anime.

Forever sad that a reviewer objected to the "so long as we are EUV benighted..."

My cat is a poor audience for my woes, all he understands is that I am not spending enough time throwing pipe cleaners for him to fetch.

I feel like I have a bunch of papers to write except I also have a bunch of proposals to write except I also have a bunch of collaborator commitments to fulfill except I also have a class to teach except I also have a lot of paperwork to do except I also have to make sure I can stay in the country.

This is not a complete well-supported thought, but I think there is something to the successful Dem masculine not presenting as a "guy's guy" specifically, but the audience for their performance of gender being more general.

TIL that in Old English the goose/geese tooth/teeth foot/feet alternation for plural nouns also applied to "book", so singular boc became plural bec! I am charmed.

Bring back beek!

Changing the fiefdom mechanics to corporate mergers and introducing new/weird partition/succession policies sounds like a fun mod.

Someone needs to make a proper interrobang emoji. ⁉️ and its reverse don't quite satisfy me.

I think I am passably literate but some of these email screenshots have me asking "What the fuck are you saying?" often enough to question that assumption of literacy.

Tell me five classes you took in college:

1 per department to keep things simple.

No Slack, I do not want any one of my "AI Search Previews" to summarize what happened in Slack this week. I especially don't want to have to tell you that I don't want this *for each accursed workspace*.

*there was a similar period at the start of this postdoc for reasons including a breakdown of the only printer the US government uses for printing a specific ID card.

Then I just have to manage another inter-position period of a couple of months without pay* and possibly have to move back to India if the rehiring takes longer than the grace period of my current status' expiration.

The funny thing is it would probably be easy to make my current supervisor the Grant Admin PI, include the salary for a postdoc in the budget (and maybe relocation costs for said postdoc) and then he could hire me later.

I'm not actually at this point quite yet (as in reply post) but it doesn't feel good to be this close to the wire.

If I'm lucky I can get a budget approved in time to start the visa process for a soft money situation at my current institution but that would require a lot of bureaucratic things to happen extremely quickly.

Going to really suck to send an email to STScI saying I can't put together a budget for my Cycle 33 proposal because I don't have a job/visa that will let me stay in the US to use that funding.

If you use ChatGPT in any form to apply for graduate school you should be sent back to preschool to start all over.

Had an intriguing editorial discussion recently: how did people in the past talk about 'minutes' when they didn't have watches or standardised times? How does that affect your thinking?

Come down an Elizabethan/Jacobean rabbit hole with me.
