Getting excited about my next trip to Germany this May! Will be visiting family and friends in Frankfurt area plus Karlsruhe and Augsburg. The Black Forest and Neuschwanstein Castle are happening too! Keen to purchase a cuckoo clock, even though it's something said family and friends disparage. 🏰🌲🌲

Bug of bugs! I seem to have been unwell since 1 January, though it fluctuates. Today I slept for 9 hours in the daytime after being very unwell overnight.
Took a Covid test the other day but negative. Anyone else on this rollercoaster? The fun includes a very tickly cough.

‘He further stated the inclusion of Dublin and Belfast within “The Northern Loop” would require negotiation over border arrangements and political cooperation.’
Oh, no biggie there then!

Got a LinkedIn request from a ‘Tech Specialist’ at a ‘technology consultancy’ that “accelerates business value”. Just no. I am a user-centred practitioner, come back when user needs are your starting point, not inserting random tech.

The Clifton Suspension Bridge. A suspension bridge engineered by Brunel which stretches over a deep gorge with a silty green colour river running through it. There is also the slick of rain and bright green of vegetation.
So great meeting up with my current team in real life in Bristol! Work was done, post-its taken away, pies eaten, harbour socialising enjoyed.

Yeah, agree. Literally floated off! Quite liked what one reviewer said about sprinkled with Eau de Tim Burton!
To be honest I was also partly going for some moors scenery!

Oh so Margot Robbie obviously had a dream to play Cathy! I’ve seen her in other films (like Goodbye Christopher Robin, Mary Queen of Scots, even Barbie), where she’s been a great actor. She wasn’t one in this though. Totally unconvincing from her and Jacob Elordi. And everyone else.. :(

Luckily, although I studied it and was vaguely interested in seeing it, my main motivation was to watch something at Bristol Everyman in Clifton, and that part was very good. 😊 📽️

So I watched the new Wuthering Heights film. Apparently the director portrayed what they interpreted from the novel at 14.
That’s not how I interpreted it!
All depth missing, just seemed silly. And that’s before considering Heathcliff’s race change.
Most of the seminal lines weren’t in it, either.

On the way to Bristol! First time for 20 years! I remember last time there meeting a uni friend interviewing for the same British Council role as me, she was already back then exploring Passivhaus off grid living!

The Industrial Revolution could have been faster but people in unions argued for things like limited working week hours and weekends.
The pace of the machine is not the pace of a human society.

Tackling technical debt without stopping delivery - Rumman Amin
Ignoring technical debt isn't free. It's deferred cost with interest. Here's how teams can pay it down and continue to develop modern services.
Technical debt always loses the prioritisation battle, but ignoring it isn't free. It's deferred cost with interest.
I wrote about how gov teams can tackle it. Make debt visible, protect sprint capacity, and modernise incrementally without stopping delivery.

Weekend plans, folks? I’m going to see my friend’s band play at The Lexington, Kings Cross which will be nice especially as it’s a bit of a reunion too.

Some mid-price small venues… Moltobuono (Park St) is good cosy pizza. Pieminister (Broad Quay) is very Bristol even if they do have London branches now. Dhamaka (Clare St) is a good Indian. Watershed is big and can be noisy (& food can vary a bit) but it’s a Bristol institution & a wonderful place.

@suziw.bsky.social I’ve passed your list on and we’re feeling excited for Monday’s dining! Does Pieminister originate from Bristol then? Tempted to give that my vote, though the other options you’ve suggested sound really good too. 😋

BREAKING: The Department of Education has ended its directive that attempted to restrict diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in schools nationwide.
This is a victory for academic freedom and education equity.
