And the month before, we read and discussed Assata Shakur's autobiography. We discussed the Black Power Movement in the United States and the corruption and violence used by the state and police as a tactic of oppression. We also drew connections and similarities to so-called Canada.
20.05.2025 15:00 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Last month, we all watched a panel discussion by Indigenous Climate Action: The Rise of Fascism & the Indigenous Peoples Response.
Our circle discussed the points raised in this panel to draw lessons about our collective struggle against colonialism & fascism.

We had many tough and important discussions at tonight's book club. Thank you to everyone who joined us to talk about Assata Shakur, systemic oppression, capitalism, feminism and community organizing.
We will update soon with our next book club meeting and the chosen topics.
Reminder: tomorrow April 7 is our second book club.
We will be continuing with our discussion of Assata Shakur's autobiography and the Black Panthers. Please join the conversation and help us choose our next book to read.
Hope to see you there!
Thank you to all who joined us at our first monthly gathering in the park. It was rainy but we had some great discussions and even met some new faces.

Reminder!
We are meeting at Centennial Park this morning at 10 am for our first monthly gathering of the year. It is a very rainy morning, so please dress appropriately and bring an umbrella!
Note that at an all-candidates meeting in Maple Bay, a question from the audience asked if candidates would support a transphobic bylaw that would ban trans women from using women's washrooms.
Only two candidates said they would NOT support such a bylaw: Johanna Kemmler & Joanna Lord.
If you live in North Cowichan and if you choose to vote in elections, @thediscourse.ca just published questionnaires from each candidate for the municipal by-election on April 12.
Learn more about the candidates here: thediscourse.ca/cowichan-val...
Our monthly gatherings will start up again on April 6 :)
