there are many stories that fall apart when you remove the core couple, but if they don't have their wounds healed by each other in the end, that's not a romance to many readers

it sucks that there's no genre home for those kinds of works

instead we get the true crime of romance /🧵

it could have been like the interplay between dark fantasy and fantasy, where the former is one where the protagonists may or may not win, and regardless the outcome, the cost is definitely steep, but you've still got magic, quests, court intrigue, etc. 🧵

GDT's works are dark romances to me: there is bleakness but there is also love and tenderness, but the happily ever after is one-sided

dark romance could've turned into the subgenre with all the trappings of Romance but it ends in tragedy 🧵

in reading conversations about how to genre Guillermo del Toro's work (horror, dark fantasy, gothic), it's reminding me of a thought I had a while ago which is this:
