On this day in 1984, R.E.M. played the second of a two-night-stand at the Mad Hatter Ballroom in Athens, supported by Nightporters. Thereafter, the band were too big to play the Athens venues and future shows took place outdoors or were performed under pseudonyms or with minimal promotion.

When a rare event like this occurs I find it incredibly disrespectful of fellow fans to say Michael Shannon should step aside & let Stipe sing the entire song himself. These moments wouldn’t even be happening if not for Shannon/Narducy & band celebrating the R.E.M. catalog.

One thing I've always regretted was never seeing R.E.M. live when I had the chance. So I went to this show just to hear some R.E.M. tunes and they were fantastic! I danced and had a great time. And then it happened.. Michael Stipe comes on stage and sings 2 songs with the band and I almost fainted.+

I am bonkers for R.E.M. - a soundtrack of my life band, adored since I was quite a young teen. I was lucky enough to see R.E.M. in concert (with Indigo Girls as openers) many moons ago. I can confidently say were I somewhere, anywhere, and Stipe came out on stage, I would be utterly uncool about it.
