Dear Caleb,

How much time is too much time? Are we talking a few percentage points or a whole letter grade? You have to get me something to work with here. I know you want an education, I just don’t know if you’re looking for the basic package or one of our premium plans.

They aren’t really selling us products *guaranteed* to improve engagement, they are selling us the idea that learning has to be fun every single day, if we’re good enough teachers to make it happen.

Shoutout to that time we had all of the technology and zero of the strategies to make remote learning valuable, viable, or anything resembling the magic that was promised and sold.

What he said! Students are human; humans will (more often than not) choose the path of least resistance.

This does not necessitate smartphones being in schools.
There is a telephone in every school (and classroom!) and parents have always been able to communicate with their kids. Parents being constantly connected to kids is part of the problem. It’s deeper than social media.

Jonathan Haidt wrote an entire book about why cell phones should be banned in schools. There is not a shred of research that supports having cell phones in schools helps kids in any way, and a mountain of it that proves the opposite. They are designed to be addictive.

It only counts as patriotism if they say it over 2,000 times before graduation.
