One day I'd like to find a Threshold I can share with others, before it all Slips my mind. I think the world could use that, these days. A way to step out of the Garden, and explore the Wilder places, on the edge of the Seeming. Where it feels like home.

I think Sorter may have been from there, originally, and just never told me. Not that Sorter ever really tells anyone anything, at least not directly. Which is part of why I have my suspicions.

Fragments and pieces of it find their way into everything I've made since, and there's things I make, that feel good, if I look at them at just the right angle, I realize that they're Lost Children who've come to visit me in whatever world I happen to be in at the moment.

It was a wonderful world, something that felt like home, and I spent quite a lot of time trying to convert it into words I could share. Then I started writing the story it was for, and six sentences in, my brain said, "Perfect- that's enough."

Once upon a time, I worked on a world I referred to as Lost Children. It danced merrily across genres, where one could Stumble across a Threshold and find oneself in the Wilder or the Garden, depending upon which way one has stumbled. If the Seeming was high enough you might not even notice at first

And that three word sentence is going in the inspiration folder. I need to do something with that.

I also ran across the term 'witchblood' and gave me this concept that it's an innate trait some people have by courtesy of ancestry. You need to have the trait to be able to draw upon magical fonts and shape them into spells in some way. I want to do more with that.

Past that... I don't know. I feel like channeling divine power at will is very rare and exists with purpose: when the purpose is fulfilled/complete, the connection fades as well. That may be a quest, a task, or filling a role.

Enchanted items and magical constructs are a mix of the two; most people have seen them but they don't tend to own them. The local burgomeister might have magic rings as part of their finery, well-off tradesfolk may have a Hob.

Ritual magic is similar to alchemy in that anyone can learn it, you just have to put in the time and master all the nuances of when and how to adjust for the situation. It's like learning to use Blender. Most places of worship have at least one ritualist, for example. So 1 per 100 or so.

Going to depend upon the magic in question (and still a work in progress);

Alchemy is a tradecraft, and a resident alchemist is a sign your settlement is growing to a respectable size. You typically see one alchemist per 250-300 residents in an area.

I have this vision of a judicial system that involves birds, rodents, and other urban creatures serving as a mass surveillance state, with corporal punishment for crimes being meted out via a bard throwing magical insults for a combination of pain and humiliation in the town square.

I don't know how well they would address the common need for health care, trade, or law enforcement, but I imagine it would at least be a nice place to visit as a tourist

I mean I feel like skalds/bards are going to lean into social programs, invest in the arts and community, and probably go heavy on the political intrigue.

Druids will go for sustainable, ecologically sound public works and minimize expansion.

Mimics are a horrible idea for a pet, for reasons we've discussed before. That does not mean people stopped keeping them.

Want to come up with more beyond this.

Another questionable one is the kaith, which are living ink. People get tattooed with the ink, which establishes a shape for the kaith's 'resting state,' but otherwise it can move around and change shape on the body independently. Black is the most common color although iridescent is second.

This leads directly into Hobs, which blur the line a bit being as they are constructs, but they are as much a pet as a sci-fi setting might have a robot dog. Shapeshifting, usually look like wet red clay, often in the form of tiny dragons or other animals.

I've loved the idea of tiny false dragons and dashase's leaf dragon means that yes, there are draconic creatures that can sit in your hand which some people keep as pets similar to small birds. I give credit to Marie Brennan's A Natural History of Dragons and dashase's artwork.
