IMO Kamikaze effectiveness came more from their ability to overwhelm USN CAP fighter defense-small groups of aircraft arriving from multiple directions, often below the radar. Would have worked (and did work) without suicide tactics too, but too few pilots had training.

Yeah, it has always been darkly ironic for me, that the most successful IJN attacks on the carriers during this phase of the war (Princeton and Franklin) were conventional.

Didn’t matter much in case of lightly armored ships like US carriers or destroyers, but was very much true in case of battleships or British carriers. The bomb would have had to be released from higher altitude to penetrate armor though-probably outside suicide attack pattern.
