AS my PhD research explored, children gain most when parents and professionals (in this case educators) form a supportive partnership. This blog explores how partnerships can provide a route to understanding children together.

Not been here for a while - 9 months ago I submitted my first draft PhD thesis. Now on the countdown to my Viva having finished my research and report on all my work.

@centrehealthpolicy.bsky.social

There are no guarantees that 'villages' are supporting families despite everyone agreeing that they should. Accessing support is not straightforward either. Interactions between parents + professionals can be shaped by a range of factors including gender, age, ethnicity and class

My study is set in the context of lots of children and families policies outlining the role of parents, including
the @scottishgovernment.bsky.social National Parenting Strategy opening statement linking parental value to child outcomes

My findings reveal a complex + inconsistent landscape, highlighting a postcode lottery not only re professional/service responses, but also in how the role + value of parents are perceived, and the impacts/outcomes of positive/negative interactions between parents + professionals
07.12.2024 15:03 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Interviewing 25 parent and professional participants from all over Scotland provided a wealth of diverse data, reflecting the varying circumstances, backgrounds and experiences of both participant groups relating to life at home, in communities and at work
07.12.2024 15:03 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Submitted my 1st draft full thesis yesterday, feels really surreal! Ten chapters outlining three years of work, exploring the role and value of parents/carers living in Scotland, as they interact with professionals about their 3-5yr old child's health, wellbeing and development.
07.12.2024 15:03 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 2 π 1My research based in Scotland found a not only a disconnect between policy and practice, also a misalignment of perspectives and priorities between parents and professionals about the best interests, needs and rights of their children aged between 3-5yrs old.
