I think I change my opinion and go with „datasets generated by computer from computer inputs“ = synthetic. Of course experiments are processed on a computer as well, but at some earlier point there was a „real“ analog signal involved

My definition: data with error bar = empirical, data without error bar = synthetic. I.e. a single-point DFT total energy is synthetic, MD-based results not
