And I realize that we can’t choose the exact moment that a book, which was presumably in the works for years, will be released…

But this is when you choose to vilify DEI? When white supremacy and white nationalism is gaining traction everywhere? When violent xenophobia is increasingly normal?

Or that books about Canada will not be funded or published if they lack a certain number of POC. (When I edited a book about Canadian culture, the only note we were given from the publisher was that we must have a chapter on hockey.)

Also? I spotted multiple factual errors in the column (actually a book excerpt) on my first read. And not just small things. Like claims that a white journalist, Wendy Mesley, was fired for simply reading a book title. (Someone who was present on the call reported that she said the n-word.)

I allow the conversation about ‘common sense’ in my communication classes to come up organically (it always does) because it’s the best way to look at how its appearance conceals a bias. Sometimes it’s not conscious? But just as often it’s actively weaponized to reframe bias as undeniable truth.

I was asked by the CBC what it would take to save the college system. I replied that since Doug Ford loves giving $ to his pals, maybe we should see if Ford Fest’s hot dog supplier is available to become president of our school. I hope they run the quote as an excuse to mention this again:

If I’m being charitable, it’s probably because people who receive a lot of slurs block common misspellings and alt spellings. So anyone who’s blocked that slur? I tweeted on Threads yesterday that men make terrible electoral choices - and added a tongue-in-cheek suggestion that men just shouldn’t be allowed to vote. (In seriousness, tho, I think removing voting rights is always bad and we should instead expand voting to as many people as possible.)
