(Though I made exactly that same comment about cycling analytics back before any of the current big apps existed: they were diving into a single ride's data when the big potential was looking at trends, patterns, and deviations from pattern across rides).

I sort of gave up on that, and export to R when I want to dive deep. I think, in general, too much effort is made on diving deeply into a single ride and not quite enough on looking at trends and patterns across rides.

The probability of being found out is more of a deterrent than severity of punishment. This has implications for monitoring of potential bad behavior vs. coming down hard post-discovery. It's also related to "it's not the crime, it's the coverup."

Default GC can be a little intimidating, especially for newer users--but occasionally even for me. I just had a conversation with my dentist about all his (hand) tools. 90% of the time he grabs the same 3 tools. I've paid him enough to outfit his entire damn office and he uses 3 hand tools.

Getting the US into avoidable disaster in Iraq took months and months and months.
In Vietnam, it took years and years and years.
We are just three days into this totally unnecessary, one-man's-whim fiasco.

But to be fair, often I'm looking for things that stick out from the trend, not always the trend itself. Anyway, a change in slope is something that sticks out from a trend.

I often avoid parametric detrends at first; sometimes they work after I'm familiar with the reasons and sources of noise. When looking for a small change in something it's good to use techniques that don't enforce fit.

Trying to spot changes in the slope of a noisy trend can be hard. Sometimes it helps to remove the trend.

The Birthrate Is Plunging. Why Some Say Thatβs a Good Thing.
Wise words from *Dr* Guzzo:
βWe spent decades shaming women for having kids under the wrong circumstances, for not having their ducks in a row,β said Ms. Guzzo, the demographer. βNow they are holding up their end of the bargain.β

The Washington Post's description of the bodycam video of his arrest last year, and the translation of Mr. Shah Alam's comments, is gutting. Remember, he was entirely blind in one eye and could only see three feet in the other, and he spoke virtually no English.
He spent a year in jail for this.

By harmonising height-by-age data, we reconstruct stunting patterns over two centuries.
