Occasionally, fresh stellacytes can travel to an existing star formation and build upon it, adding another layer to the star.

However, once the area surrounding the star is completely drained of keratin, the star will shed off, like a scab from a wound.

crack theory:

Certain cells called stellacytes are exposed at the scalp, bonding to the hair. They feed off of excess keratin in the hair and multiply in star-shaped formations. Since these cells aren't connected to the body via blood these stars quickly die and harden into a keratinous star shape.
