i didn't say anything about this specific person and i'm not sure why you think i'm trying to advocate for their specific moral goodness. i was saying how the original thread is a great example of something I'm tired of seeing in the art community.

your doc mischaracterizes this person's heavy referencing as tracing, so that's where your confusion comes from. tracing is 1 to 1. rotations and splicing of references makes it not 1 to 1.

i'd question if you read what i wrote as well tbh.

anyways yea ive been thinking about this for.. probably about as long as i've been posting art on the internet. at least a decade. i'm tired of this, grandpa

we need to talk. have conversations. otherwise you end up with a bunch of creatives wanting to make art and share their work being terrified to do so. you get people tip-toeing around because if they do anything wrong, they could be the next person put into a pillory.

i'm tired of creatives bringing each other down over making mistakes in their work and then leaving them on the ground to pick up the pieces of their relationship with art.
it's not what we need. it creates problems and solves none. i've seen it too much. makes me not even want to post anymore.

overall this is just not constructive. no one gains anything from this. it just rips holes in the community and fosters an attitude of bullying and shaming someone into submission rather than trying to help them understand and learn. engaging in these public rituals doesn't fix anything.

instead of lambasting someone for referencing incorrectly, you could make guides for how to use references to help one's process, or maybe direct them to existing resources if you really don't feel like making them or explaining.

this spreads more fear for participating in artistic practices 'the wrong way' than it does awareness for something so mundane in consequence.

I wrote this comic 2 years ago. I was terrified when I wrote it but had hope it wouldn't come to pass and would be a reminder of how bad things got before we pulled back.
