The disaster at the CDC, explained by its former boss The CDC has lost one-third of its staff this year. What now?

6/ Former CDC director Tom Frieden warned: “Even if [facts] are denied and suppressed and misused and misquoted and cherry-picked, facts are still facts. The plain truth is that most people want to be healthy and safe, and what’s being done now is putting that very much at risk.”

5/ Just one result: the CDC is no longer tracking data for one of the most important surveys on the health and nutrition of Americans.

A Quarter of the CDC Is Gone Another round of terminations, combined with previous layoffs and departures, has reduced the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention workforce by about 3,000 people since January.

4/ The CDC has lost at least a quarter of its workforce since President Trump came into office. This means fewer scientists to study diseases and prevent outbreaks, fewer researchers collecting and reporting health data, and fewer experts communicating scientific findings to the public.

2/ This round of cuts hit the entire Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report team, as well as employees who detect and track emerging diseases, those who collect and analyze national health data, and the teams that address chronic diseases, gun violence, and drug overdoses, among many others.

Three people hurt in Mont Belvieu explosion, plant fire, officials say A plant explosion sent 3 people to the hospital in Mont Belvieu and caused extensive damage.

1/ This week, there have been at least three dangerous chemical releases at industrial facilities in Texas, including an explosion at a plant in Mount Belvieu that injured three plant workers.

The EPA told me it would release the report when it was finalized.

But according to an internal document I reviewed and scientists I spoke with, it was already completed and ready for posting

EPA is now reconsidering a PFNA drinking water limit, which some see as possible reason to hold the report

“If you’re trying to roll back drinking water standards, you probably don’t want to release information that makes the case for why those standards are necessary” @dminovi.bsky.social told me

The report would help EPA and states set health-protective levels for drinking water and cleanup of toxic sites.

PFNA is in the PFAS family, and the report remains in limbo while local governments and companies face off in court about who will pay to clean these chemicals up
