Pope Leoβs call to love the poor could cross political aisles and heal divisions
We might find that healing the nation begins in the hands that reach out to one another.
My new op-ed just came out in the San Antonio Express-News: βReconciliation begins where we serve together.β It's on Pope Leo XIV "On Love of the Poor", on how love can break down walls and brings people together. www.expressnews.com/opinion/comm...

Yes! I think 'core theology' should open up these connections, engaging more field, helping more students situate their major in a broader perspective. I think it should also connect to more faculty, helping them to see their work within the overall mission of the school.

His distinctions (and your book) helped me, especially in terms of distinguishing audiences. Too often, core theology was being reduced to catechetics or apologetics, but these do not really capture what many of us do in our core theology classes.

Theology for the Drastic Changes Coming in Catholic Higher Education
Jason King on the future.
Glad to see my new post in Church Life Journal. It goes with my reflections in America last month. Both are trying to think through the future of theology amidst the changes in Catholic higher education. churchlifejournal.nd.edu/articles/the...

Just returned from a weekend with fellow Catholic ethicists from @ctewc.bsky.social. Had good conversations about the future of moral theology and how we can support one another in our global networks. Here's a photo of those of us from North America.

Catholics see a familiar political divide in Pope Leo XIV and his eldest brother
(RNS) β Catholic leaders hope the popeβs relationship with his brother will help Catholics in the US learn to better love each other in spite of political differences.
Just as Pope Leo XIV calls the Church to unity, his story is already raising tough questionsβabout family, division, and what binds us together. I offered a few reflections in this @ReligionNews article on the Pope and his brother. #PopeLeoXIV #ReligionAndPolitics religionnews.com/2025/05/23/c...

Why Everything Is βCodedβ Now
I think this makes doing theology in the broader public difficult. No matter what you say, it seems like you are advocating for one party or another. Instead of just talking about the gospel and its demands on our lives. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/16/s...

Election of Pope Leo XIV offers hope for unity for a fractured, fearful world
Pope Leo XIV's life has moved between north and south, grassroots ministry and Roman governance, pastoral accompaniment and institutional oversight.
As Pope Leo XIV begins his papacy, I reflect on what it means to lead with love in a divided worldβand what kind of Church weβre called to become.

Pope Francis reminded us that love holds us together

Why Arenβt Catholic Colleges the Best at the Liberal Arts?
Jason King on standards.
Excited to share my latest in Church Life Journal! A classroom discussion on the liberal arts led to a surprising question: Why do military academies rank as the "best" while Catholic colleges are missing? The answer lies in what we choose to value.

Working on my book about Catholic higher education. Turns out research suggests that cutsβtuition, programs, core, facultyβ don't save colleges. They may give a short-term boost but often make things worse long-term. Cuts frame education economically and make the college look like a discount store.

A List of Bible Verses on Poverty, Justice, and Compassion
The Bible contains more than 2,000 verses that admonish the faithful to uphold justice and help alleviate poverty.
In my attempt to post things that are not "look how terrible this is," here is an article listing 2,000 scripture versus that call Christians to care for justice and the poor.

Are adults forgetting how to read?
A survey by the OECD suggests a worrying decline in literacy
It is a bad news article but it does note that "What no one much doubts is that people with nimble brains find it rather easier to swerve lifeβs worst misfortunes, and are more likely to enjoy the best outcomes."
