I've struggled with this recurrently in my work. I can see getting one attack roll to simulate a minute of hand-to-hand struggling, positioning, feinting, and swinging. But I can't see getting one attack roll to simulate a flurry of arrows. Missiles & movement are why I don't do long rounds. 2/2

Sounds right. I sort of like long rounds for hand-to-hand combat, but not for movement or missile weapons. Someone can hustle 400 feet in a minute, and that's more than I want combatants moving in a round. One can shoot a flurry of arrows, and that's more arrows than I want shot in a round. 1/2

It's wild to me that D&D has introduced a third aspect of one's character type, the background. D&D started with one aspect: race/class: magic-user, dwarf, etc. Then the thief class introduced the race-class combo, which eventually expanded to all races and classes. Now there's a third: background.

one old D&D trick was to use cats as weapons, swinging them by the tail and using them to strike own your foes

How many arrows do you suppose an archer can shoot in a minute? And how far do you suppose someone (in or out of armor) can hustle in a minute? These questions also weigh on how long a melee round should be.

In 3E when I wrote that kobolds consider themselves to have the blood of dragons flowing in their veins, I assumed everyone would know that it was just a preposterous myth that they told themselves, but people liked the idea so much that they ran with it

That's just "helm" spelled funny. Like "epee" is just "spade" (ie, sword) spelled funny. And "melee" is just "medley" spelled funny ("medley" originally meaning hand-to-hand combat).

We used this map for the final adventure in Mighty Ones. The shrine we defended was the Temple of Yahn. When I asked the players what connections their characters had with the city, @robheinsoo.bsky.social said that his grandfather had been made to walk "the Plank." The players loved these maps!

Old TalismondΓ©, if you please.

The word "blessed" derives from a Germanic word that meant "sanctified by being spattered with blood", and it's a cognate of "bloody". I guess spattering altars with blood was how you did it back in the day.

My magic-user in @robheinsoo.bsky.social's Arduin Bloody Arduin campaign is now 3rd level, and I'm upgrading his miniature from the Ral Partha wizard (based on a Frazetta illo) to the Ral Partha enchanter (based on Monty Python and the Holy Grail's Tim). Still do love me some Ral Partha.

The hidden-orders diplomatic fight over choosing allies is a game in itself, and it still stresses me out to think about how many points I should invest in the dragonewts. The great map! Heroes & superheroes. Dinosaurs. Some scenarios are simple, and others are epic. Hard to part with. 2/2

Loved this game back in the day. So many interesting details! The Hydra that you have to feed troops to when you ally it. The Crimson Bat. I even clipped the corners off the chits so that they would stack next to each other more nicely. 1/2

One way I judge how good a rule is, is by looking at how many other games copied or approximated the rule. With 3rd ed, for example, I looked at how often designers copied percentile Strength, level limits by race, psionics as a random add-on, attack mods by weapon & armor, etc.
