I played through the old Wolf games recently and they hold up much better than they get credit for. They are VERY different from Doom and represent a fork in the road not taken when it comes to FPS design.

As someone who was mercilessly bullied and counts it as one of the reasons it took me over a decade of therapy to unfuck myself, I would say that it exacerbates the problem the person wants to solve. Also people who say that make me kind of sick.

The Turbografx CD one isn’t a good representation, and the DOS one is missing a lot of color and has no audio (and the audio is great). It does emulate well.

Cinemaware really should put their games out on modern consoles. It’s some good game history if nothing else.

The ZX Spectrum R-Type does the impossible by delivering a fairly faithful port on very cheap 1982 hardware, and does it with style too.

This is a great October game for the Amiga. It’s probably the best of every Cinemaware formula game. Like many of their others, it’s more than the sum of its parts. Give it a try.

Had a dream a while back in which I discovered the existence of the "Grave of the Fireflies/Super Mario World 2-in-1" for the Wii. It basically functioned as a DVD except for a "special features" section that literally only had an SNES emulator playing Mario World. It went for absurd prices on eBay

I think the reason Sonic the Hedgehog transcends the 90s is that there’ll always be a Rolling Stones for a Beatles, a Looney Tunes for a Mickey Mouse… this is just bringing the ‘tude to mascot platformers and it has occupied that niche since.

Defender, Wizard of Wor, Lazerian, Dig Dug, Spy Hunter, Solar Fox, Pinball Spectacular is Bomb Bee, LeMans is Monaco GP, Gorf, Centipede, Pole Position, DK, Blueprint… list goes on

Don’t forget that the C64 has a bunch of great ports of classic games and originals on cart.

So many of those pre crash games systems could’ve hung in there if the market hadn’t cratered. 2600 was getting pretty close to early C64 graphics with those coprocessors or even just added RAM.

Alternate universe where Coleco gets all the Konami MSX ports.

And people like Defender but Pac Man has the rep as the worst port ever. I think they’re both fun in their own janky weird way. We liked Pac Man a lot as kids and if we’d had Defender, we would’ve been way into it.

As an aside, a friend in third grade had Stargate and I couldn’t believe it was 2600

Pac Man on #Atari2600 is NOT worse than Defender. Defender:
- City instead of mountains
- You can’t tell when you use your smart bomb because it doesn’t even blink
- Your ship disappears when you fire
- You want to see a flicker fest? Holy crap
- The enemy designs don’t resemble the arcade’s
