It’s temperature and if the higher elevation populations are more cold adapted than lowland zebrafish. We don’t know yet!

It’s hard to say, most shoals look like only zebrafish but in some places we saw them close together with other species. Not sure if by choice or random chance

Some institutions in China used to have big pay outs to authors for papers in nature journals, so someone could be making money out of this. Not sure that’s still a thing though

Upper thermal tolerance (CTmax) of twelve eelgrass-associated fish species following five days of acclimation to 19ΒΊC (Ambient; blue) or 23ΒΊC (Heated; orange). Coloured points represent individual CTmax measurements and are jittered horizontally for clarity. Black points and error bars indicate species means Β± S.E. Y-axis values show temperature in ΒΊC; X-axis values are shortened species names (left to right): Gadus morhua; Merlangius merlangus; Pleuronectes platessa; Ctenolabrus rupestris; Symphodus melops; Pomatoschistus flavescens; Pomatoschistus minutus; Gobius niger; Gasterosteus aculeatus; Syngnathus acus; Nerophis ophidion; Syngnathus typhle. Among families, Pleur. = Pleuronectidae; Gast. = Gasterosteidae.

A small mottled orange-red-grey fish is held in a black gloved hand. It is roughtly diamond shaped, with a humped back and a huge, sharply spined dorsal fin. The mouth is small and protruding, and the eye is bright and intelligent looking. Own photo.

As we really enter the home straight for #25DaysOfFishmas, Day 23 brings us probably the cutest little monospecific family on our list. This is Capros aper, the boarfish, the only known member of the Caproidae.

No paper from me or my lab will ever be submitted to an MDPI journal - including any of their superfluous "special issues". I will very rarely (if ever) cite MDPI papers. And I will never review for them. deevybee.blogspot.com/2024/08/gues...

The same goes for FrontiersIn journals, among others.
