Thermostatic as in, people get used to a certain status quo and don't notice how hot/cold it is, but they WILL speak up and notice and change their minds when the temperature changes direction.

I think people have thermostatic opinions on this. The status quo is to tell victims to fuck off and bury them in lawsuits, so any attempt to make good with the victim immediately turns bungie from "company the plagiarizes the most" to "company that does the most to fix plagiarism when caught".

I would love restaurants to serve 400-600 calorie meals but they don't, because a full meal of that size requires the same amount of labor as a full meal of 800-1200 calories, and so restaurants basically are targeting habitual overeaters to pad their margins.

So now "meals" are now "snacks."

The #1 thing that has caused me to stop eating out in the last 5 years has been the sheer minimum portion size it requires. I try to not eat more than 1600 calories a day and every single main dish with a side blows that entire budget in one sitting. So of course I'm 'snacking' the rest of the day.

I feel crazy because 'snacks' are like 400 calories and 'meals' are now 1200 calories, and I think that's largely driven by restaurants chasing margins by selling you 2x the food you need for 2x the price, because the cost difference is negligible since most of the cost is in labor, not ingredients.

I've not yet encountered a single program that doesn't run on windows 10 still, even if you use the windows 11 installer, and for everything that isn't windows-specific I still have a linux server.

I think in a few years, if I need to run something in windows I'll just get a VPS.

For stuff that requires windows, I keep an extremely debloated Windows 10 (group policy and registry enforced no copilot, web search and telemetry disabled, no automatic updates or forced restarts), and about the only thing I'm missing is W11's better multimonitor and HDR support.

Best Friends had a few prescient moments that have stood the test of time, but one of the more underrated ones was the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 video where they go online and see 2 people playing and Woolie correctly calls out, "The only people playing are other youtubers trying to get content."

How Anonymous Bettors Cashed In on the Iran Strike, Just Hours Before It Happened

Senator Chris Murphy said for our article: “I think it’s likely there were people making the decision on war with Iran that had a financial interest in doing so because they had placed a bet on one of these markets."

It really is fascinating how much this boils down to "SpaceX is the only profitable private company Elon has, so if he wants to suck up public AI investment on the NASDAQ before OpenAI does, SpaceX Has to absorb xAI and go public"

The first comic slide of “reasons to wear a mask 2026” depicts a person wearing a white mask who says “Hell yea!” Around them are bright pastel colors and cute but ominous looking SARS-CoV-2 viruses. Text reading “a lil manifesto about taking care of yourself and others- with over 50 citations! By Gillian Levine.”

Love the Renault 5. I think this is an American phenomenon too since most car companies here aren't even selling sedans, let alone small hatches. EVs are an even tinier fraction of that. It's all $40-80k SUVs.

Cries in American.

Its also 4200lbs which is... Not light, but surprisingly good. If they made a 2 door short wheelbase low range lucid air and ripped the luxury features out of it thats the closest to what I'd want.

My skewer in the heart of the car industry is "Batteries and electic motors should easily outlast and cost less to repair than piston engines. So why aren't car companies profiting off long term rental and refurbishment, and instead EVs depreciate like crazy and end up in landfills in 7 years?"

This is not unique to EVs, but the focus on leasing technology over owning, the necessity of BMS, over the air updates to correct issues in software, and satnav route planning for range anxiety has made every EV at the forefront of obsolebce for a technology that was supposed to be more reliable.

I would not even take it for granted that ADAS is desired in all cars. Even as a feature that can be turned off every time you start the car, you're carrying lots of expensive failable electronics everywhere you go and paying for software whose use can contribute distracted driving.

It kinda sucks loving technology in a world where all the capital stakeholders capable of building technology hate people.

I remember my first few cars were built in the 1990s, cost $1-10k used and were simple, cheap, light, buy to own, handled well, with minimal maintenance, self serviceable, expected to last 150k miles, and didn't have built in distracted driving. I'd pay $100k now for an EV like that, if it existed.

I think there's some promising options with Hybrids especially with FWD. Things like the Honda prelude and civic hybrid it's based on feel simple and reliable. But they're not immune to new car issues and it gives me the same sensation of microsoft shoving copilot down everyone's throat.

I need an EV I can thrash around a track and not expect it to be towed home. I need an EV that tells me what temp the battery pack is with a physical dial. I need an EV that will last 150k miles if I do all basic maintenance. No one is even remotely close to building that.
