The thing about highly competitive products is that the less differentiated from competition they are, the more sensitive they are to price. Unless you invent a new super banana, you'll have a hard time convincing me to pay $2 more for an identitical banana. Steam Machine isn't a Steam Deck.

Maybe the play is valve expects to bundle these with steam decks and steam frames to capute enthusiasts who WOULD buy a $1500 steam deck. Instead of an Xbox rog ally you go get a steam deck and steam machine. It's a price discriminatory steam deck peripheral.

This is for the tiny niche of people who own a steam deck and no PC and wish they could more easily play on their TV. Do those people want to spend $1000, but only on a Box and not an actual computer? I don't think so.

Without subsidies I don't see this costing under $1000 and it's not a compelling product for anyone at those specs and that price. Not when an equivalent gaming PC is $1000 and a more powerful console is <$500. The steam deck had a unique form factor. This doesn't.

Okay, nevermind. This is a small volume, niche enthusiast product and not a serious piece of gaming hardware, understood. The steam deck was a total fluke and Valve has no intention to win over the >100m console owners who aren't spending money on steam.

I think some of this has to do with attention economy executive brainrot. "people only have so many hours a week to play video games so we should get them to pay $70 for as few hours of enjoyment as possible so they spend more overall" is the kind of thinking that treats games as disposable.

Like, at some point around the late PS3 era game studios collectively decided to pivot from "we should get as much gameplay as possible out of every hour of dev time spent" to "critical player path should look as expensive as possible, and everything that isn't critical player path is irrelevant"

There's a concept of 'using the whole buffalo' where a video game company tries to squeeze out as much enjoyment of every asset they spend effort making, and I think this has largely been forgotten or ignored in pursuit of film-like one-off setpieces meant to justify prestige pricing.
