Disabled people are not “less than”

We aren’t on a 24/7 vacation or “lucky” if we don’t have to work

We didn’t choose to be sick

It’s a punishing existence spent fighting to be treated like a person

Fighting for healthcare, fighting for social supports, fighting for survival

Once again, no one chooses to become disabled.

It’s not a moral failing or something a person can “try harder” and avoid.

You are not owed our medical history or an explanation.

You are not the arbiter of who’s disabled “enough”.

The entire responsibility of handling Covid was offloaded on to the individual and they were told to “assess your own personal risk”, while simultaneously NOT informing the individual of actual risk - such as unseen, cumulative vascular and neurological damage, risk of long covid in kids, etc.

Weird because I could have sworn the NYT told us we shouldn't worry about these viruses and should just get back to brunch

Slowly but surely the big institutions are catching up. C19 damage is making it into the medical mainstream. People have published it for a long time, now it’s turning up in teaching materials, public announcements.

The pandemic has, and continues to have, significant effects on global politics. I am certain that in the future entire books will be written on this subject, but these effects can be distilled to one concept: the vast majority of people have normalised that which is abnormal.

By the way…

Five years is nothing.

Pandemics and many epidemic and endemic diseases wreak their damage over decades…

Our short concentration span is a problem.

I think I shocked someone to the core.

They discovered I still take C19 seriously enough to practice precautions.

After more than 5 years.

Because.

The evidence says it’s still a problem.

Long Covid Is Real -- And It's Changing an Entire Generation Long Covid is affecting hundreds of thousands of kids in America, and many doctors and schools refuse to recognize their illness.

Once again Rolling Stone knocks it out of the park with Covid coverage.

Long Covid is real and it is a serious threat to our long term health.

It’s already surpassed asthma as the most common chronic illness in kids.

Chronic illness is often invisible

Many disabilities are invisible

People can look “fine” on the outside and have devastating disease processes inside their body

They can be living in constant pain, fatigue & exhaustion

Don’t judge a book by its cover

“You’re so lucky! I wish I didn’t have to work!”

People act like we’re getting a permanent vacation.

The reality is we are forced to live in legislated poverty.

Barred from earning or marrying without losing our meagre benefits.

Denied autonomy.

And we’re sick & in pain.

It’s a 24/7 job.

I'm old enough to remember when almost everyone smoked, knowing just how bad smoking was for health. A lot of people still drink well above recommended weekly limits, even though they are not physically dependent on alcohol. I think about this a lot when I think about Covid.

1. I've had a surprising number of conversations about Covid-19 over the past week or so, all sparked by the fact that I was, as always, wearing an FFP2 respirator. People in healthcare facilities, taxi drivers, people on trains and buses.

5. And remember, if you believe that Covid is 'gone', you will, by definition, never, ever consider that you may have Long Covid.
