Applicants will be evaluated based on interest, availability, and need (e.g. lack of mentorship about graduate school, barriers to access, belonging to marginalized or historically excluded group in STEM). You will NOT be evaluaed based on your level of research experience or traditional academic merit (e.g. GPA, coursework). https://eegradpreview.weebly.com/apply.html
All main text is white in black boxes. The link is bright green in a black box. Several headers are bright blue with blue text. There are 3 lime green decorative circles on the left and right of the top of the graphic. There is a female presenting scientist cartoon in a white and pink lab coat. She is wearing lime green safety goggles and shoes and holding a lime green flask. She has brown hair. Teal wave decorations on bottom right.

Besides the fishes I saw a troop of drills and other monkeys, nesting sea turtles, African Grey parrots, giant fruit bats, Xenopus, chameleons, and lots of other cool creatures thanks to the many local and international scientists there for the Conservation International rapid assessment.

The origins of maize were the subject of controversy for well over a century. Even in the 1950's botanists like Edgar Anderson weren't totally sure what continent it came from!
We published today a new model for maize origins (www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...). Let me tell you how we got here. 1/

We finally have a lab logo - check it out!
FYI: we had this done through 99designs. Ran a contest, had about a dozen or so entries, after a few back-and-forth revisions of our favorites we picked a winner. This cost $300. Could have done cheaper with AI but I like paying people...

circular timetree of 344 true crabs, colored by superfamily and with line drawings of representatives around the circle that makes it look like a zodiac/mandala
Today we publish a new paper on a molecular phylogeny of true crabs. We find crabs transitioned from marine to non-marine environments 7-17x over 100+ myr! This culminates 15+ years(!) of effort from an international team! 1/4 (thread in replies)

I am an evolutionary and marine biologist interested in how new structures and functions originate during evolution. Eyes, vision; photophores, bioluminescence. Macroevolution. Phylogenetics. Molecular Evolution. Integrative and Comparative Biology.
PhD student at Duke; working to expand the functional genomics toolkit to non-model marine invertebrates. I work with urchins, but my heart belongs to corals. Lover of live music, scuba, and anything involving the ocean.
