I recently visited the the Gettysburg-area Sachs Covered Bridge. This bridge played a prominent role in the Battle of Gettysburg. Two brigades of the Union Army’s I Corps crossed the bridge while en route to the battle and Lee's Army of Northern Virginia traveled over it during their retreat.

This photo of two U.S. Navy sailors standing near the destroyer escort USS Mason (DE-529) was taken at the time of this ship’s commissioning at Boston Navy Yard in March 1944. Mason and the subchaser USS PC-1264 were the only U.S. Navy ships during World War II to have predominantly black crews.

Here is the formidable baseball pitcher Herbert “Doc” Bracken (1915-1994). This photo was taken in 1944 during his time as a U.S. Navy sailor at the Illinois-based Great Lakes Naval Training Station in the midst of World War II. Bracken played for that naval base’s Black Bluejackets team.

This 1944 photo features the officers and crew of the submarine chaser USS PC-1264 on board that vessel. PC-1264 was one of only two U.S. Navy vessels during World War II to have a predominantly African American crew. The other vessel with this distinction was the destroyer escort USS Mason.
