Dave Ball 3.5.59 — 22.10.25 Being in a duo is unlike being in a band. It's not a gang, it's not a team. It's got a different dynamic. There's just the two of you, trying out ideas, bouncing off each other. It's more like a reflection, a sounding board. it feels more like being siblings than extended family. That's the relationship I've had with Dave Ball, over nearly forty years. Dave died yesterday morning. Boy, am I going to miss him. We had an inauspicious start. We met in a tiny studio in Chiswick, where | was co-producing a record that tumed into ‘Jack the Tab’ with Genesis P.Orridge. We'd been at it for a day and a half, and, astonishingly, had nearly finished the whole album. Dave, who was a friend of Gen's, tuned up on the Sunday afternoon. | was quite nervous about meeting him — he was a proper pop star after all - and a very big presence in that cramped room. But we hit it off straight away. Dave set up his Alesis sequencer and drum machine, plugged into a big warm synth, and we were away. | made up some lyrics to shout, and got in the vocal booth with Laura B, who supplied a breathy chorus. Gen's complaining that the track is taking too long — an hour and a half, which is half an hour longer than we've taken to record and mix the other tracks. Dave and the assembled gang put down a couple more tracks in about three hours, and the album's finished....

...and sad to get home from the concert to find out Dave Ball has died. Between him and Vince Clarke, they accidentally wrote the book on 80s electropop. Much copied, never bettered. And then The Grid and more besides. Reminiscence pinched from Rich Norris's […]
