Lots in this one! Iain Crichton Smith, two portions of James Hogg, William Thom, Susan Ferrier, Robert Burns, Tom Nairn, Rauf Coilyear, Muriel Spark, The Buik of King Alexander the Conquerour, James Beattie and a generous helping of reviews. Tuck in!

Soutar House – Perth Civic Trust

Sad to hear that Perth & Kinross Council has decided not to retain the William Soutar House. Family don't want it and so it is being sold. This is where the bed-bound Soutar wrote much of his poetry and his diaries. A blow to Scotland's cultural heritage.

Indeed. The best part is, the train, which only has 2 toilets, apparently left Aberdeen with one not working - as if that's okay in the first place.

Happy St Andrew’s Day! Alasdair championed Scottish independence and believed Scotland could be a nation with a new vision of itself. His 2014 screen print artwork reads: β€œIs Scotland a Possible Nation? Yesβ€”Make It!” #alasdairgray #standrewsday

That's not aimed at Hobsbawm himself, who I admire.

Probably not. But the anecdote - light-hearted as it is, of course - reminded me of the traditional English dislike of the continental tradition, especially in philosophy: the idea there's some sort of virtue in public school amateurism and bungling through. Something we've all paid for over time.

I know, I was kidding really! But the traditions of intellectualism are arguably different in the various home nations, something the metropolitan centre has tended to obscure.
