I'm happy to share a recently published article with Will Greaves, where we present an original dataset of 164 public opinion polls across the Arctic from 2007-2024 that illustrates the fragmentation of the Arctic into two distinct blocs.

The US has long been a "really reactive power," increasing its attention as other actors expanded their presence, observed @ggricius.bsky.social with @lemonde.fr

@ggricius.bsky.social spoke to Wyoming Star News on how the Greenland incident, while seemingly calm for the moment, may cause long-term damage to the Alliance.

U.S. interest in Greenland is long-standing and primarily driven by homeland defense considerations, but everything the US needs for its defense is already covered by the defense agreement between Denmark, Greenland, and the U.S.
21.01.2026 06:50 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0The so-called Russian and Chinese ships or military threats to Greenland are not real. There are Russian and Chinese ships in the Bering Strait, on the opposite side of the U.S. This idea that is driving a so-called US need for the purchase of Greenland is purely manufactured.

It's already been a busy start to the new year, with many Greenland-related inquiries. So to say the obvious:
Greenland is not for sale. Greenlanders do not want to be a part of the US, and respecting their self-determination is the most important message.
@ggricius.bsky.social said the Trump administration’s claims that Russian and Chinese ships are circling the island are “just not true. The Russian and Chinese ships are not, in fact, in the North Atlantic... They’re in the Bering Strait."

While the US's plans to annex Greenland may draw Nuuk closer to Brussels, support for full EU membership remains limited. Whatever course the island takes, the decision is its own - with comments from @ggricius.bsky.social and Lin Alexandra Mortensgaard

In a new op-ed with @highnorthnews.bsky.social, I make the point that the Nordics now have a shared strategic geography. This comes with opportunities and challenges.

If you'll be in Oslo this week (December 3-6), reach out for a coffee as I'll be at Fridtjof Nansen Institute's Nansens nordområdeseminar 2025.

Third, I published an article in Marine Policy on desecuritizing tactics by #Russia and #Canada in the Northern Sea Route and the Northwest Passage. While Russia uses technical-economic framing, Canada adopts a low-key approach.

Second, Andreas Raspotnik and I wrote a chapter for the newly published 'The Nordic States, NATO and the EU in Arctic Security' on the EU and the Arctic - analyzing how the EU can/should act in the Arctic with many different pathways before it.

First, Nicholas Glesby and I wrote a piece for the Arctic Yearbook on #NATO in the Arctic in the 2020s. We offer important framing work for how the Alliance has acted across the different parts of the region.

Happy December! I'm excited to share three publications that dropped last week (and today) that have been in process for some time, and I'm thrilled that they are all out in the world and, more importantly, open-access!
