Got to say, this does not bother me. What gets to me is fundamental misunderstanding of word "random" which gets further propagated by common speech where it is used as "unexpected". In 9/10 cases when a scientist say non-random, they mean non-uniform.

And this is my favourite figure, nicely illustrating diversity and turnover of oligocentromeric satelites. Look at Carol and Sandra - one invaded the other at least 2x, which I find particularly amusing.

Very proud of @jamesimcc.bsky.social to submit his first PhD paper about evolution of genomes and centromeres in taxa with oligocentromeric organisation. Lots of interesting discoveries including possibly the first reported re-evolution of monocentricity.

Excited for this. Teaching popgen is one of my favourite parts of my job and I've wondered about doing an online version of the class for sometime. Teaming up with @jrossibarra.bsky.social to do this is wonderful.

Peer review is broken because papers that are entering the process are so often sooo bad, just because academics are submitting to the peer pressure and feel thatβs what they need to do for their careers and grants.

How can one submit 5 papers in 3 month period? I understand thatβs not what the article is about but maybe it kind of relates to why the system is so cloggedβ¦

Photo of Bradysia coprophila by Sam Ebdon
Does anyone have a photo of Charles W. Metz by any chance? He originally isolated the Holo2 line of Bradysia coprophila we still use after more than 100 years after their original capture.

This, except I think we can take leadership in our hands, we donβt need funders to do it for usβ¦
All of us can avoid publishing and reviewing for for-profits and it does not have to be too much of a sacrifice (plenty of flashy society/nonprofit journals out there). Be the change.

I guess I just donβt want to believe that your experience (from how many departments and how many countries?) generalises enough to give people impression that they should publish in Nature branded journals. I have some (very limited) but opposite experience.

Release v2.1.0 Β· tbenavi1/genomescope2.0
This version have small improvements to niceness of the code (removing global variables) and minor improvements to the installation script.
The biggest improvement is the option to generate reports...
We have a new small GenomeScope based on @jgrg.mstdn.science.ap.brid.gy's pull request. Thanks James!
Main new feature --json_report will generate a json formatted list of all the inputs and outputs which will make automatic processing of genomescope results easier.
