Sean Sublette - Meteorologist for Congress: Welcome to Virginia
YouTube video by Sean Sublette Sean Sublette - Meteorologist for Congress: Welcome to Virginia

This is an unprecedented time in our nation's history.

Conspiracies, lies, and gaslighting are running amok.

We need more scientists in Congress.

I was born and raised here, and I am running to represent all Virginians from Chesterfield County to the Chesapeake Bay.

Great post by @kathiedello.bsky.social's folks at NC State Climate Office on monitoring humid heat and why WBGT is largely the best metric for it. Also features one of our (cc @wxkels.bsky.social) plots showing why @jjrennie.bsky.social is increasingly miserable!

Back in 2023, I presented at @ametsoc.org and said, "Hey, we have a flood scale & people love it, but we did it ourselves. Can we do better?" And Dr. Steven Woods at UH reached out to me. The rest is history (find out more later today). We now have a flood scale rooted in social science.

This whole thing about Colbert being canceled for โ€œfinancial reasonsโ€ is BS. He has the top spot in network TV in his time slot. Heโ€™s not second to anybody. This was โ€œFire Colbert OR (quid pro quo) the FCC doesnโ€™t approve of your sale.โ€

Donโ€™t overlook these things.

The two biggest weather killers are: heat and floods.

Tornadoes and hurricanes come to mind, but they're not it. Climate change is making heat waves hotter (drought and fires are byproducts) and floods are more severe, sometimes as a result of a tropical system, but not always. Nobody is safe.

Flood Watch issued yesterday at 1:18 pm.

WPC had mesoscale discussions throughout the event.

NWS issues Flash Flood Warning at 1:14 am.

NWS issues Flash Flood Emergency at 4:03 am.

NWS was on the ball.

The challenge is always getting the warning the last mile and getting people to respond.

Catastrophic Flooding In Texas - Were There Warnings? Deadly flooding in the flash flood alley of Texas is raising questions about warnings. Here's a preliminary (but not conslusive) analysis.

Camping locations near rivers often have really bad reception. Your cell phone should alert for a Flash Flood Warning, if you haven't gone in and disabled it.

This isn't about forecasts and warnings, it is about communication and action.

There have been claims that NOAA/NWS did not foresee catastrophic TX floods--but that's simply not true. This was undoubtedly an extreme event, but messaging rapidly escalated beginning ~12 hrs prior. Flood Watch mid PM, "heads up" outlook late PM, flash flood warnings ~1am.

AOC here with a digital literacy lesson of the day: weโ€™re all vulnerable to manipulation, especially when weโ€™re outraged, and even when that outrage is warranted. Iโ€™ve had politically left friends reach out to me this week w/ some pretty wild & very scary scenariosโ€ฆ & they cited BlueSky as a source.

While Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill was huge, it's focus was taxes and mandatory spending programs.

There are still at least a dozen departmental appropriations bills to consider this year, including the one that will potentially slash NOAA.

That fight and others sre still to come.

Excerpt from proposed NOAA budget showing zero funding for Climate Laboratories and Cooperative Institutes

Proposed NOAA budget zeros out ALL climate laboratories and cooperative institutions.

GFDL, NSSL, GML, etc.

This appears to also end the US greenhouse gas sampling network, including at Mauna Loa, the oldest continuous carbon dioxide monitoring site on Earth.

I know we need to act.
But we need to sense and understand too.
What's lost?
What's true?
What can be saved?
Where we can we walk away, divest, stop pouring our own energy into what is devouring who and what we love?
What's emerging?
