Back in 2023, I presented at @ametsoc.org and said, "Hey, we have a flood scale & people love it, but we did it ourselves. Can we do better?" And Dr. Steven Woods at UH reached out to me. The rest is history (find out more later today). We now have a flood scale rooted in social science.

This whole thing about Colbert being canceled for “financial reasons” is BS. He has the top spot in network TV in his time slot. He’s not second to anybody. This was “Fire Colbert OR (quid pro quo) the FCC doesn’t approve of your sale.”

The two biggest weather killers are: heat and floods.

Tornadoes and hurricanes come to mind, but they're not it. Climate change is making heat waves hotter (drought and fires are byproducts) and floods are more severe, sometimes as a result of a tropical system, but not always. Nobody is safe.

The challenge is always getting the warning the last mile and getting people to respond.

There have been claims that NOAA/NWS did not foresee catastrophic TX floods--but that's simply not true. This was undoubtedly an extreme event, but messaging rapidly escalated beginning ~12 hrs prior. Flood Watch mid PM, "heads up" outlook late PM, flash flood warnings ~1am.

I’ve had politically left friends reach out to me this week w/ some pretty wild & very scary scenarios… & they cited BlueSky as a source.

While Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill was huge, it's focus was taxes and mandatory spending programs.

There are still at least a dozen departmental appropriations bills to consider this year, including the one that will potentially slash NOAA.
