Maybe you should pay more attention to the Zibelman quote.

Inertia, frequency regulation and the grid The old system of regulating frequency on electricity grids with the help of the inertia provided by large spinning masses is under threat by the rise of wind, solar, and batteries. But what will repl...

At this point it isn't even ignorance anymore. It's just lies.

But we knew we could solve this frequency/inertia problem at least six ago (as documented in my 2019 article on the subject) - probably a lot longer.

Overall, solutions to integrate very high levels of #renewableenergy are showing up faster than even #energytransition advocates like me suspected.

Zibelman on this: โ€œWhen youโ€™re determined to say how best to go about this, as opposed to why itโ€™s hard or why it doesnโ€™t work, the solutions appear.โ€

The issue of why we need inertia is oft-misunderstood. & I suspect we'll only need inertia until we replace our current system of frequency stabilization w/ systems based on DERMS (or something similar) managing thousands (millions?) of grid-forming inverters. /3

But what I find really interesting here is the idea of using a "clutch" on existing gas plants, instead of synchronous condensers, to supply the lost physical inertia when big coal and gas fired power plants retire.

What an elegant solution! Why hasn't this been thought of! /2

As coal fades, Australia looks to realize dream of 100% renewableโ€ฆ The countryโ€™s grid operator says shifting from coal to clean power is not only possible but inevitable. The work there could provide a road map for otherโ€ฆ

Some interesting stuff in this latest @canarymedia.com article. For one, it makes me chuckle to hear @jessejenkins.bsky.social say "โ€œThereโ€™s nothing impossible about 100% renewable supply," remembering old arguments (we agree more often than not these days). /1

Jewish Voice For Peace protests Mayor Brett Smiley's trip to Israel After spending a week in Israel, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley has returned home to the capitol city, and was met Thursday morning with a group of protestors.

Voters here in #Providence #RhodeIsland should remember this in next year's mayoral race: when mayor Brett Smiley wears his Israel pin, he stands with tech oligarchs & the far right in favor of ethnic cleansing, and against the majority of voters in his own party. /5

And what is so profoundly disappointing is the widespread political enabling of Israeli genocide by America's #DemocraticParty, despite the overwhelming majority of Democratic voters opposing Israel's "military action." /4

Many American Jews sharply critical of Israel on Gaza, Post poll finds Most Jews say Israel is committing war crimes โ€” and 39 percent say genocide โ€” while often distinguishing between the country and its leadership.

As part of the 60% of Americans (Jews + non-Jews) who oppose #Israel 's genocide in #Gaza, I find it interesting that a slightly more US Jews disapprove of Israel's "military actions in Gaza" than approve of it.

So who is behind US support for war crimes? /1

The United states does not import meaningful volumes of cells from China. So the only potential impact to the US is on wafer prices, which are in the $0.02 per watt range.

This will marginally drive up prices in Europe and ROW. For the US market this is meaningless.

Now Trump is outright admitting itโ€™s his plan.

Solar power offers a ray of hope in Middle Eastโ€™s least electrified country Yemenโ€™s first large-scale solar plant is helping to alleviate electricity shortages in the southern port city of Aden, bringing some relief to residents and businesses which suffer losses particularly when the intense summer heat hits.

The next great wave of solar is coming to nations like Yemen that lack adequate or stable power supplies.

Pakistan, South Africa, now Yemen. /1

Qcellsโ€™ customs-detained cells released to its Georgia factories A tightening in federal customs enforcement under a law to restrict imports made by forced labor in Chinaโ€™s Xinjiang region had snagged Qcells cell imports from Southeast Asia.

QCells claims that Hanwha #solar cells from Korea detained under UFLPA have been released to its factories.

I'm highly skeptical, given that the sole source of current, official, publicly available data on UFLPA detentions tells a different story. /1 #forcedlabor

Coal employs 40,000 workers.

#Solar employs 280,000 - seven workers for every coal industry worker.

This administration isn't pro-worker. It's pro-fossil and anti-future.

Can you supply your evidence of the assertion that hydro is not available in most parts of the world? Because it seems pretty widespread.

Also: neighboring hydro works. With enough transmission, we in New England could balance very high levels of wind and solar w/ hydro in Quebec.
