To film and TV producers everywhere: please stop showing quill pens with all the bloody feathers.

These were stripped off, as the weight unbalances the pen. But for theatricality's sake, every now and again, you can leave a little tab of feather near the end

I gave up on him ages ago ... try to ignore his grifting unless people propagate it ... then, I might comment

This is a cartload of nonsense from very intelligent people who ought to know a lot better. The only decent point they make against the UK government's prespective recognition of Palestine is that it's wrong to use it as an explicit bargaining chip to reward or punish Israel.

Thread follows.

Forget comets, I'm stuck on the light sail model for the Crazy Eddie probe in The Mote in God's Eye πŸ˜‡πŸ€£

In case you're in doubt (thanks to the nonsense from Avi at Harvard), 3I/ATLAS is an interstellar comet passing briefly through the solar system.

But the alien nonsense did make me re-read the Crazy Eddie part of the Mote in God's Eye ... not a bad model for how aliens might visit.

There seems to be a weird, perverse inverse snobbery around maths (and much other STEM).

Sort of "only nerds/geeks do maths, and I'm just normal, not a geek."

Pre-Eyckiaans Ursulaschrijn This house-shaped shrine dates from the period around 1400, before the painting of the Flemish Primitives. Only about thirty panel paintings have survived from the period 1400–1430, the so-called β€˜pre...

Starting on my reliquary project this weekend.

Step 1 is to prepare it for egg tempera painting, so gesso.

Big Q is do I *really* want to go fully authentic with rabbit skin glue, etc, or use a ready-made casein gesso ...

Oh, and I'll paint the box it came in for practise 🀣

BTW the preterite indicative singular was Δ“ode

I wouldn't transcribe it as "y" in this context. "Go" is always a hard g, whereas "ge" is a soft y.

Note: medially, it can be w e.g. dragan, to draw.

And for fun, it turns out someone caught me printing that 🀣

Main things to take from the photo: the table is too low; my back needs a higher working height.

I'm using pear wood, following Albrecht DΓΌrer's recommendation. Hard, fine grain, and generally a joy to carve

The original of the crucifixion block is here: sammlung.mak.at/en/collect/t...

Trying to leave fine lines of wood is challenging, and some fine details I'm convinced were done with bronze inserts (pins, strips) as you can't carve islands that small ... but it was fun trying 🀣

I managed a bit of progress. Part way through cutting the crucifixion block, and the two new blocks tweaked & printing okay

This is the first assessment of Trump that makes me think he might actually act on Russia, though given the repeated hollow threats, I remain somewhat sceptical

Just 'cos my dad played with them, when Durham were a good team, I'd have to include two of the 1962 Lions 🀣

Mike Weston (far left back row, next to my dad)
Stan Hodgson (with ball)

The colour photo was taken by my mum, the black & white is the official team photo.

We're trying to do everything as historically accurately as possible. It's taken ages to get the ink recipes to work and produce decent quality prints .. and still loads to learn.

A very fun living history project!

So, gesso, draw design, cut, wash off gesso, soak in linseed

Printing on gelatin-sized linen. 15th c inks. Gesso is just a light coat on the block so I can mark the design and it doesn't smudge
