Hiroshi, the protagonist, a cynical journalism student, wakes up in the middle of a strange, beautiful park surrounded by walls, with a giant golden ferris wheel with a closed eye on it in the center. He is confused, not knowing where he is or how he got there, and has a strange pain in his back+feels extremely cold and surreal. He meets eccentric mystery writer Eden Goodridge, who is in the same position as him. She has a cross drawn on her forehead in ash, and Hiroshi finds he does as well. Eden also has strange eye-shaped cut-like markings all over her. Neither of them know what is going on and they find mysterious locked gates with the "abandon all hope" poem from The Divine Comedy over them. They then find a poem with cryptic instructions: "A pot of ash lie by a cursed tree Where God's omniscient eye looks down on thee Mortal sins weigh above a golden wheel Eternal gates with an infernal seal If crossing Hades' pass is in thy will The Judge has laid down tasks thou must fulfill: Accept the sacred boon; A cov'nant form And let in hateful hearts His love be born Assemble thirteen sinners stained with vice Fill their lungs with the holy breath of life Paint thy hand with ash and upon each brow Draw a mark of the Lord's eternal vow And thus begins this game of recompense Where sinful souls can earn a second chance"

The two of them then find the "pot of ash", and on the ferris wheel, they discover each cart is filled with the corpse of another person, each with strange, gory markings on them indicating brutal deaths. Drawing crosses on each of their bodies somehow animates them. Each of the characters react differently, but are mostly all in a panic and unsure of what is going on, until the eye on the Ferris Wheel suddenly opens, and a biblically-accurate angel called Seraphim shows up, explaining the situation to all of them. It turns out they are sinners that have died and entered purgatory. They are unable to “die” and have been brought back as zombies whose souls are being used for something called the "Armageddon Experiment", which aims to test the selfishness of humanity. This experiment will last 40 days, and at the end of it, they all will be "judged". Seven symbols then show up on the Ferris wheel. Six of them represent simplified devil characters, and the one at the top, the "final sin", is a heart with devil horns. According to Seraphim, these symbols represent their sins, and in order for the characters to go to heaven after the 40 days are up, they must "purify" each of them. Seraphim says they'll explain how to do that in a moment, but first they must explain an offer they're giving to all of them:

Seraphim asks if any of them feel regret about losing their lives so soon, and if they could go back, would they change anything? They explain there is a way to return to life, and fix their biggest mistake at the same time: they just need to sign a "demonic pact". This pact, however, requires a "Sacrifice", which means the damnation of the soul of another one of the sinners, preventing them from ever earning redemption. If a person's name is signed in the blood of another sinner on a contract, the one whose blood was used to sign will be sent to Hell for eternal torture, and the one whose name is signed will become the "Soulless". The Soulless must pass a "Divine Trial" in order to fulfill their contract and return to life with the ability to right their wrongs and undo their biggest regret. If the Soulles fails to pass this trial, however, they will be struck down and sent to Hell themselves. Either way, they will be sent to Hell when they eventually die, but if there is something they need to achieve in the world of the living, the offer stands.

No one would ever do that? Too bad! See, it turns out that people making these contracts is required for ANYONE's salvation... See, about these divine trials: in them, the sinners who did not make a contract will be pitted against the Soulless. Only one group will prevail, and the incentive for the other Sinners is that catching a Soulless after they sign a contract is the only way to purify the first six sins on the Ferris Wheel, meaning that there will need to be six Sacrifices and their corresponding Soulless, and they must catch each one or that sin will never be able to be purified. With these rules, 12 people will need to be sent to Hell, and only three people max will be able to make it to Heaven after the forty days are over. The Final Sin will be purified through a final test that the remaining sinners will be put through on the last day called the “Final Judgement”. These rules cause massive distrust and psychological distress between the others. Hiroshi and a few others are very skeptical of the entire idea, and resolve to find the truth behind their deaths and the secrets Seraphim seems to be hiding, but with the 40 day time limit and the breaking psyches of the sinners, how long will this determination last?
