This needed to happen. Landing with Artemis III was way too ambitious, given the fact that the lander and suits haven't even been tested in spaceflight. In the 60s, NASA needed 2 missions (Apollo 9 & 10) to cover that much ground.

I'm for this. It's true we did this much faster in the 60s/70s, and we know the basics. However, with untested technology that's all we know right now. New spacecraft and equipment require new techniques that must be tested incrementally. NASA made the right call. #Artemis

Seems like they're step-for-step following the Apollo missions with some new twists. Artemis II will be like Apollo 8 and the rendezvous-suit testing mission will be like Apollo 9. Wouldn't be surprised to see an Apollo 10 mission profile soon.
