CRC/C/GC/26: General comment No. 26 (2023) on children’s rights and the environment with a special focus on climate change Committee on the Rights of the Child

The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child states:
β€œA child has the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.” If climate change is not mitigated, that right is at risk.
Not by accident, but through decisions, priorities, and what is left undone. Who pays the price for delay?

The colours break and re-form, and stillness becomes motion. Freedom is not a place to reach. It is the edge we finally dare to feel. (2/2)

She floats with her eyes closed. The water holds what the body can no longer carry alone: the weight of years, the sharpness of memory, the ache of boundaries, self-made or imposed. Around her, lilies turn in the current like small proofs that beauty persists even in rough waters. (1/2)

This piece reflects laughter and the emotions we try to mask with it, those moments when a smile is sincere yet conceals hidden scars. #art #acrylic #painting

A close-up acrylic painting of a person's face, capturing an intense moment of laughter. The subject's eyes are tightly shut, with deep wrinkles forming around them. Their mouth is partially covered by their hand, which appears expressive and detailed. The painting uses bold, expressive strokes with vibrant colors such as yellow, blue, and pink blended into the skin tones, adding emotional depth. The background combines earthy green and brown hues, complementing the warm tones of the subject's hair. The overall mood suggests a complex mix of joy, vulnerability, and hidden emotions.

The Shadow of Laughter
Acrylics, 90x65 cm

Laughter often seems light and genuine, yet behind it can linger shame, insecurity, and pain. Shame is clever, it can make us hide our smile, even though it's one of the most beautiful and authentic parts of us.

We can argue when we past 1.5C in the IPCC terms, but the fact is heat is on, and we are on our way to 2C or more of warming. In the best scenarios 1.5C and 2C would be for brief "overshoot" periods, but it is a gamble...

Cop16 nature summit agrees deal at 11th hour but critics say it is not enough UN biodiversity conference in Rome ends with fragile accord but questions remain over whether funding will emerge

#COP16 secures $200B/yr for nature. Big win, but will it reach the ground? Over half of countries lack action plans, and industry lobbyists loom large. Climate and biodiversity are one fight. Time for binding, not voluntary, commitments. 🌍

Last year, for the first time, the global average temperature exceeded the 1.5Β°C threshold. Yet, instead of impactful climate action, we’re seeing delays and political compromises. Trump’s decisions make things a whole lot worse, but let’s be realβ€”this wasn’t going great to begin with. (2/2)

Most countries miss UN deadline for new climate targets Many of the world's biggest polluter nations have missed a U.N. deadline to set new climate targets as efforts to curb global warming come under pressure following U.S. President Donald Trump's election.

Yes, Trump’s climate policy is extremely concerning, but the problems don’t stop there.

The UN deadline for new climate targets has passed, and neither the EU, China, nor India managed to finalize their updated emission reduction plans. (1/2)

Research is the foundation of freedom. Without open science, we cannot understand societal issues, find solutions, or build a more sustainable future. When decision-making is based on censored or restricted information, it no longer serves the public it only serves those who want to prevent change.

Watching the program Nazitown, USA on Finnish TV. The people featured in the program use very familiar expressions and opinions, like claiming a group of people lazy, "America First," and holding ecstatic mass gatherings where these ideas were repeated. How is it possible that we are here again?

On climate, did you know that only 11% of people in the US (and even smaller percentages in Canada, the UK, Australia and beyond) are dismissive?

Yet because their voices are so loud and persistent, people often think they’re 50%.

This is why I advocate so strongly for using YOUR voice!

Why can't all the knowledge in the world just stick in my head effortlessly? I wish I had a system like in Locke & Key, where I could simply insert new knowledge into my mind and, at the same time, remove all the shitty things.

Earlier, I wrote about the pendulum of forces and counterforces that keeps progress in motion. Furuta and Bromley’s research offers a fascinating example of this: the strongest environmental commitments often provoke the strongest counterreactions. (1/3)

The World Happiness Report 2024 notes that acts of kindness increase happiness for both givers and receivers, fostering mutual well-being.
So, does it matter why we do good, if the outcome is positive? Selfless or not, kindness often brings joy to the giver too. What do you think?
