People who always drive inhabit the environment in a peculiar and limited way, insulated them from the world and the risks they create. One good argument for multi-modal living - ok, drive when you must, but also walk, cycle or take the bus - is that it supplies a richer perspective on the world.

A very large white stone doorway with ‘Tribunal correctionnel’ carved over the lintel. There is a severe-looking stone woman either side of the huge metal double doors, now green with age.

I really enjoy little interactions with people. Once had a fascinating chat with someone from India on the platform at Aachen station. Started with translating the muffled delay announcement and ended up discussing perceptions of Britain post-Brexit.

If you’re lucky and the weather’s ok, going south you can see Lincoln cathedral from the East Coast mainline.

I loved that a only few years ago Bridlington Spa were selling v fancy coffees alongside Bovril and Ovaltine. Suspect the latter two may have dropped off the menu now.

Found the most 1970s British artefact ever in a charity shop. A whole book about sandwiches written by Ken Dodd, illustrated by Bill Tidy, and featuring many recipes where putting pineapple in things makes them “exotic”.

Very interesting. Junction near me is pretty unfriendly (not least because a construction site yellow road sign blocks visibility). It would benefit from this sort of treatment. Have been keeping a rough count of how often people give way - can probably count on one hand in 3+ years.
