Columbine happened my sophomore year of high school. I didn’t have the same experience growing up as my children do now. Between the active shooter drills & the police presence, my kids are now concerned someone will deport their friends. This is heartbreaking & I don’t know any words of comfort.

I’m an atheist, but I grew up in church. That experience was a mixed bag that came with a lot of trauma, but my late mother advocated for compassion, mercy & dignity for all humans. She believed all people are worthy of love, & she was a stand-in for many people who had been abandoned.
