One of my favourite real example of this…

My players were trying to track and whilst each tried a unique approach to give them a roll (survival, investigation, nature etc) they ALL rolled NAT 1’s.

My response: “congratulations everybody, you are outside”

My advice would be to consider “WHAT KIND of person do I want to play?”

Start there, not with traumatic backstories but with personalities.

I think players forget they can be a “normal” person, like they have to have a major backstory.

It’s great when you do, but equally great when you don’t overcomplicate things and instead consider “how would my happy-go-lucky react in f*ed situations?”

I had a player who simply wanted to bee keep. No trauma or complex backstory.

There’s still nuance as an ever positive protector of nature who had to keep facing difficult situations as an adventurer.

Do you save the derailing train or the school group crossing the road in front of it?

Next time your PC says “can I have amnesia” find a fun and creative misdirection for them to uncover. Like making out they’re evil!

Or maybe… you do make them a baddie. 😈 As then how fun to contradict their current hero lifestyle!

When actually he ran a vigilante group determined to take down the slave trading circle.

The shady notes were from his agents with intel and looking for his next orders. 👀

He LOVED uncovering that mystery, and the emotional rollercoaster.

I had a player character who said “I’m not creative, can I have amnesia and you write my backstory?”

So as GM I made it seem he was a slave trader, lots of notes slipped in his pockets for shady shipment arrival dates and rendezvous points.

He thought he was a bad guy. (1)

Of course, for the absolute newbies I give at least some basic suggestions.

“Here’s the setting, now what would you like to do. You could shop and restock, you could scope out an area….” But the agency very much falls on them.

And honestly some of the BEST moments we’ve had in my sessions have come out of my players needing to just say *something*.

The imagination of your players could just blow you away. So give them the agency to try it!

My favourite piece of advice given to me as a GM is “stay silent”. If you have players who love roleplay then I highly recommend!

“Here’s a setting, now what would you like to do?” Say nothing else. 🤐

Humans have a weird desire to fill silences, so let them.

Yay thank you! And yessss. I’m imagining that too; determined to find the people they lost with endless hope! Another layer could be “but why not me”. The obvious answer is proximity, they weren’t there at the time. But the survivor guilt!!! (And then what if there is a reason they’re left behind!)

So your character sets out to uncover that mystery (set by the GM).

There’s still depth to your character because imagine a compassionate moral compass who’s terrible at adventuring - and yearning for their friends and family.

I swear 99% of backstories have some kind of trauma. And it makes sense, why else would you choose the adventurer lifestyle?

But how’s this: you had a fine life, until one day you went out hunting only to return to an empty village. Teapots still warm, fires still crackling.

My current character has lightning based arcana so I’m thinking a Nat20 could be a dirty guitar riff from “Thunderstruck” AC/DC.

She also has a pet so a Nat1 would be the Puss In Boots 🥺 face.

I’m proposing unique sounds for you to make as your character, whenever you roll a Nat 1 or Nat 20, what’s your sound going to be?

Plogging! I was today years old when I learnt this term!

Plogging is a trend that started in Sweden where you pick up litter as you go for your jog. I love it!
