A giugno questa zona non è ancora raggiungibile per i ghiacci. Partii a fare il giro delle isole con una nave (non rompighiaccio) dell'università di San Pietroburgo verso il 10 agosto. Questa zona divenne accessibile poco dopo ferragosto.

Ci andai nel 1999 per un paio di settimane (e poi in Giordania). Mi fece da guida un collega siriano che si era laureato a Roma. Un viaggio bellissimo. Purtroppo molti dei monumenti visitati non esistono più specialmente nella zona di Aleppo

Puberty marks a dramatic transition. Across the valley, young women’s bodies become the canvas of cultural identity and beauty ideals: Girls begin to style their hair and decorate themselves with beads, shells, and metal jewelry. Growing up in the Omo Valley means growing up inside strong cultural worlds — with deep-rooted systems of belonging, oral history, and ecological knowledge. Yet it also means facing profound tension between tradition and modernity.

The Borana, part of the Oromo people, are pastoralists with a democratic structure, living in arid areas near the Omo. Girls focus on water collection, milking cattle, and learning oral traditions, which are integral to a society that values livestock as a form of wealth. Education and NGOs are gradually expanding access for girls, promoting literacy and health.

Karo women shave the sides of their heads, leaving the crown, which is styled (e.g., twisted knots). Young girls today often straddle two worlds: one defined by ancestral rhythm — cattle, kinship, and ritual — and another shaped by roads, tourists, and schools. Many are learning to navigate both, blending tradition and modern aspiration.

The Borana use a shawl or light blanket-type overwrap. All women wear scarf head coverings. Men often wear a "prayer beanie" cap or a turban.

To grow up as a girl in the Omo Valley of southern Ethiopia is to live at the intersection of beauty and burden — to inherit a proud culture rooted in nature, kinship, and art.. Her world is vibrant, communal, and embodied — but also fragile, as centuries-old customs meet the modern world’s gaze.
