Φέρτε μας κρασί να πιούμε και του χρόνου να σας πούμε. Σ' αυτό το σπίτι που 'ρθαμε τα ράφια είν' ασημένια του χρόνου σαν και σήμερα να ναι μαλαματένια. Φέρτε μας κρασί... Σένα σου πρέπ' αφέντη μου καρέκλα καρυδένια για ν' ακουμπάει η μέση σου η μαργαριταρένια. Φέρτε μας κρασί... Πολλά 'παμε τ'αφέντη μας ας πούμε της κυράς μας Κυρά ψηλή κυρά λιγνή κυρά μαυροματούσα. Φέρτε μας κρασί... Κι αν έχεις κόρη έμορφη βάλτη μας κεράσει να ευχηθούμε όλοι μας να ζήσει να γεράσει. Φέρτε μας κρασί... Κι αν έχεις γιο στα γράμματα βαλ' τονε στο ψαλτήρι και ν' αξιώσει ο Θεός να βάλει πετραχήλι. Φέρτε μας κρασί... Σ' αυτό το σπίτι που 'ρθαμε πέτρα να μη ραγίσει κι ο νοικοκύρης του σπιτιού χρόνους πολλούς να ζήσει. Φέρτε μας κρασί... Τα κάλαντα πήραν το όνομα τους από τις καλένδες της Ρωμαϊκής εποχής, που σημαίνει οι πρώτες μέρες του μήνα. Ήταν, δηλαδή, τραγούδια που τα έλεγαν στην αρχή του μήνα. Ως έθιμο όμως είναι παλαιότερο, καθώς έχουν βρεθεί αρχαία γραπτά από την εποχή του Ομήρου, που συνδέονται με τα κάλαντα. Αργότερα, στο Βυζάντιο τα κάλαντα διατηρήθηκαν και αφομοιώθηκαν από τον Χριστιανισμό. Τα κάλαντα τραγουδιούνται από μικρά παιδιά, αλλά και από ενήλικες, την παραμονή. Ξεκινούν με έναν χαιρετισμό προς τους νοικοκύρηδες, που άνοιξαν την πόρτα τους, στη συνέχεια αναγγέλλουν τη μεγάλη χριστιανική γιορτή, που έρχεται, και καταλήγουν σε ευχές για υγεία, χαρά, καλή σοδειά κλπ. Στην ελληνική παράδοση υπάρχουν πάνω από τριάντα διαφορετικές παραλλαγές, πχ ποντιακά κάλαντα, κρητικά κάλαντα. Συνήθως, τα παιδιά, που ψάλλουν τα κάλαντα, κρατούν το χαρακτηριστικό τριγωνάκι, αν και παλαιότερα στα νησιά κρατούσαν ένα καραβάκι. Εκείνο που έχει μείνει αμετάβλητο από την αρχαιότητα μέχρι σήμερα σχετικά με τα κάλαντα είναι το φιλοδώρημα. Σκοπός, δηλαδή, των παιδιών που τα έλεγαν ήταν να πάρουν κάποιο φιλοδώρημα. Σήμερα δίνουμε χρήματα, παλαιότερα όμως η νοικοκυρά κερνούσε τα παιδιά γλυκά, μελομακάρονα ή κουραμπιέδες. Τα κάλαντα είναι από τα λίγα έθιμα που διατηρούνται ζωντανά τόσο στη επαρχία όσο και στις μεγάλες πόλεις.
