Not on my bingo card for 2026…

Clarks is returning to Haywood Mall after 7-year absence

The chain originally opened at the mall around 2012-2013, taking part of what had been a Limited and later a Victoria’s Secret.

The former Sears at Haywood Mall remains behind a construction fence. It seems like progress is being made to turn it into a Primark on the upper level, but nothing visible yet.

Old Time Pottery found itself being acquired by Gabe’s in 2023, and this store was among those who rebranded.

Oddly enough… there were Kmart era remnants to be found in the vestibule, but I believe they met their end with the rebranding.

Old Time Pottery leased the space in 2004 and began renovating. They would open in 2005 with the renovation consisting of basically gutting the whole interior, while leaving the former garden center to languish.

They’d spend the next few months renovating, before it would open on October 25, 1998 as Big Kmart 3965. They lasted until the 2002 bankruptcy took out this and two other locations in the county.

Walmart opened here in 1986, alongside BI-LO, Hechinger, and Petsmart. They would depart in October 1997 for a new supercenter elsewhere in town. After sitting vacant a for bit, Kmart snapped it up.

I don’t normally post Kmarts (chalk it up to an oddly rabid fan base), but a peculiar case…

Ad in the LA Times seems to confirm the address as 230 W. Monroe - president was Jim Winstead as of April 1979

They were behind Spring Hill as well, as per a 1979 article in the Carpentersville paper. I'll continue digging and update as I try to find more.

In 1995, as part of what had been a successful effort to lure Dillard’s to the mall, Haywood added this expansion wing.

While it does match the mall’s aesthetic decor-wise, it’s a lot more different than the OG 1980-built Haywood.

The unexpected side effect of having an autistic obsession with malls is that you end up kind of becoming a newspaper nerd.

Knex was my shit as a kid. Still got a roller coaster and Ferris wheel from them, and a box of miscellaneous parts I got from mom.
