a smile tugs at the corner of your mouth as you gather up the phone and dial the singular saved number.

only one way to find out.

it’s a note, scrawled in sylus’s elegant, flowing script: “if you wake before i return, there’s a change of clothes in the bathroom and a pot of coffee in the kitchen. eat if you must, but don’t spoil your appetite.“

first, a shower. and then? well, you’ll cross that bridge when you get to it.

as you make to get up, a scrap of paper sitting on the nightstand catches your eye.

the knowledge has heat creeping into your cheeks. since when is he so considerate?

flustered, you toss off the covers and stretch to chase away some of the soreness that collected in your muscles overnight. damned couch.

sylus must’ve moved you after you passed out. nothing else makes sense.

as you take in your surroundings, your thoughts stray to the idea of him carrying you through his halls while you slept, cradled against his broad chest. but then he also must’ve unlaced your boots and tucked you into bed.

you’re not sure how long you sleep, but when you eventually stir, you’re no longer in sylus’s office. no, you’re burrowed beneath silken sheets in the privacy of the guest quarters, alone and still wearing your hunter’s uniform.

somewhere nearby, there’s a series of deep, resonant snaps, like a tarp caught in a breeze only less chaotic. and then you’re vaulting upward, the firmament of the world pressing on you like a lead weight.

on and on it goes—climbing, soaring, dipping. and on and on you dream.

then, warmth.

it comes on like a sunrise, slow and bright, until you recognize the shape of arms—one at your back and one beneath your knees. someone’s holding you. someone you trust.

in this realm, there is wind, crisp and cold and sweet with freedom. it’s everywhere, all around you, and you’re sure you must be swooping through the sky with the way gravity occasionally tugs on the pit of your stomach.

he holds your gaze for a moment longer before returning his attention to his ever-changing displays, their cool blue light glancing off his timeless features. “suit yourself.”

as he works, your breaths slow. as he works, your eyes drift closed. as he works, you slip into the realm of dreams.
