I read MBD for the character dynamics and a relatable narrator. The show makes me actively hate my favorite characters and wish they were given less screen time. They cut out main characters and invented terrible ones that only exist to be cringey.

I’ve never hate-watched anything before this.

listen, the first book isn’t great plot-wise. The books are great in the same way stephen king books are great - they’re entertaining and engaging, but they’re not masterful literature. MBD are relatable and have good messages, but mostly it’s just good media.

The show isn’t even good media.

The movie still I referenced for this piece was fairly low contrast so I was especially intentional in paying close attention to value while building up the underpainting. The little pinpricks of light become really effective in making the form seem three dimensional and wet.
