Nice closing note for my #CVPR2024 lead GC journey: the conference just won the IEEE iCON award for outstanding achievement in conference innovation at IEEE Convene 2025. We had an exceptionally excellent organizing committee last year, and this award is a testament to that!

Nobody has exclusive rights to the IEEE/CVF co-sponsored conference names. This is why there is a fake ICCV using the same name --- anyone can freely use these names because they were never registered in any legal capacity...

There are no plans to add a fee like this to IEEE/CVF co-sponsored conferences.

Some Trouble with the AI Book Critic How a summer reading list highlighted the tensions between institutional legitimacy and technological shortcuts

In light of the recent events surrounding the summer reading list in the Chicago Sun-Times, @wjscheirer.bsky.social wrote about large language models, generated text hallucinations, and the tech history that led to this moment. #ReadUP

What’s really interesting about this is that it isn’t a new issue; detecting out-of-set or novel input has been an unsolved problem in ML for decades, and as far as I know there has been little progress solving it in the general case (see among others the recent paper from @wjscheirer.bsky.social)

Moving beyond the hype around large models, some fundamental constraints are being ignored. A key one: novelty in environments. Check out the article for a short list of open issue in open world learning that come back to questions of novelty.
